Tonight I was inspired to take a photo of tomorrow's breakfast, sans the water and the cooking.
The spoons are on a curved black poster board, and lit with a soft-boxed off-camera flash from above and behind.[last year]
This afternoon we went to a party and decorated gingerbread houses! It was fun, this is our house. It should be tasty.[last year]
Tonight I had my first Derby Dolls experience. With some folks from work, we saw the Tough Cookies defeat the Fight Crew for the 2013 trophy! It was so much fun, I'd love to go again. I didn't get any photos of the action, but instead got this in-motion shot of their neon sign.[last year]
Tried something new tonight: making 15-second exposures out of the plane window as I flew back into Los Angeles. This was my favorite - the wavy trails were created as the plane made a turn.[last year]
A scene from Stanford, where we got an amazing tour today. This was taken near the chapel in the center of campus, and that tall thing is Hoover Tower. The image is a bit grainy at ISO 400 on a compact camera, but I like the composition I was able to get - I had to move around a lot to get everything else out of the scene.[last year]
The curved roof of the San Jose convention center with the reflections of my curtains in my hotel window, just after sunrise.[last year] still hate jerk smokers...
Sea & Clouds
A shot out the plane window as I flew north to San Jose for a conference. It was a neat scene with the late afternoon sun giving a warm glow to the water through a break in the puffy clouds.[last year]
A wall of lockers at UCLA. Apparently there is only a single style of lock available.[last year]
I've been gone for a week, so I have no idea when this happened. My assumption is that a drunk driver smashed into the pole. To add to it, there should be a bench a few feet away where I often wait for the bus, and that's also gone.[last year] pretty tree...
Little Colorado Overlook
Driving West towards Grand Canyon National Park on Highway 64, you'll pass a scenic overlook that you should stop at. It's part of the Little Colorado Tribal Park on Navajo land, and it features jaw-dropping views of the gorge created by the lazily-named tributary of the Colorado. This is one of the most necessary railings ever.
After this park, we continued onto the Grand Canyon before heading back to LA, but it was so foggy we couldn't see anything. Luckily we'd hiked it a few days earlier :)[last year]
Sun & Snow
The midday sun shining over Sunset Crater, near Flagstaff.[last year]
This is Humphreys Peak, as seen through a spotting scope at the rental house we're staying at. It was a bit difficult to line my phone up with the scope.[last year]
Trees in Field
A view near Sunset Crater National Monument outside Flagstaff, Arizona.[last year]
This is a typical snapshot from the South Rim, showing Indian Garden below, and Bright Angel Canyon leading off into the distance. What's not typical is that I took this shot right after we finished hiking out of it! We're very happy and feel very accomplished. Also, it's our anniversary :)[last year]
Day 2 of our Grand Canyon hike - we ascended from Phantom Ranch to Indian Garden, where we were met by beautiful cottonwood trees with the South Rim looming behind them. [last year]
This is why we drove to Flagstaff yesterday - for our anniversary, my wife and I are hiking the Grand Canyon! This view is just a little ways down the South Kaibab trail. The snow disappeared as we descended, but the trail was super muddy much of the way. [last year]
Our tire tracks in the snow - we were the first ones here since it started snowing. Why are we here? Check tomorrow's shot.[last year]
These boots will be used a lot very soon. Stay tuned...[last year] aww, we're cute...
This David Smith sculpture (Cubi XX, 1964) really intrigues me, and I've never been happy photographing it. Today was different, as it had rained and gave it another level with the evenly spaced water drops and reflections. I like this scene the best, although I still feel I have more to get out of it.[last year]
For this photo, I grabbed the most colorful things in our fruit/veggie basket and lined them up on a white board. They are a shallot, a fuyu persimmon, and some sort of heirloom tomato.[last year]
Late afternoon shadows on a very textured entry way. These two humans are walking out of the building.
I'm dangerously close to repeating this photo from Year 4 - Criss Cross. Gotta watch myself...[last year]
A view out the bus window on my ride home. Using the app Average Camera Pro, this is 16 images together - you can count the lights at the top if you want to verify...[last year]
Some large power lines we walked under during today's hike, which will be the last hike before a very big trip coming up next week. Stay tuned![last year] what a fun accomplishment...
A store I walked by while I did some errands this afternoon.[last year]
This would be the corner of a building, except it's a bit complex compared to most corners. You've got indentation, curvation, lineation, as well as countless other architectural terms I just made up. [last year]
A high-ISO nighttime shot of myself against a big concrete wall. I had just finished a big stadium stairs workout and am holding a bottle of Gatorade in my left hand. [last year]
Our neighbor's cat, hanging out in the alley while I left for work. She's a nice kitty, but really sucks at posing for photos. [last year] a bit reminiscent of yesterday's...
A pink flower that fell onto our porch from our upstairs neighbor's porch. The only photo I took today, and it's SOOC.[last year]
I hope you had a relaxing Veteran's Day! We went hiking up Mount Baden-Powell and fared much better than the first time we did it back in July. It bodes well for an upcoming trip...
This photo is at the actual summit of 9407 feet (2867 m). I have absolutely no idea what the pole is for. [last year]
A very large palm tree with a very symmetrical... head? [last year]
A skater gets airborne at Venice Beach.
I should have had a celebrity photo today, because we went to a fundraiser with the cast of How I Met Your Mother. I just got some snapshots for myself, my wife and my sister, though - nothing photo-of-the-day appropriate :)[last year]
A view of Levitated Mass at LACMA. This is the rock that became a celebrity moving through the streets - here's my photo of it when I saw it in transit: Final Leg[last year]
Like yesterday's photo, this has to do with technology. Instead of an obsolete piece of equipment, this is cutting edge and backs up our data at work. It's a rack-mounted piece of equipment and you're seeing it through the hexagonal screen of the rack door. [last year] yet another high-tech shot...
This photo resulted from me sticking my phone up to the giant lens of a very old projector before it went to e-heaven. [last year]
A photo of a building. There's a gap in it. Mind it. [last year]
Squares in Motion
Desperation shot of our geometric wall sconce. I'm not sure if "sconce" is the appropriate word for what this thing is... but I'm going with it.[last year]
A SOOC iPhone panorama of a lovely forest scene we hiked past this morning. My goal was to get this tree in the center, so I'm very impressed that I got it exactly right. The panorama function can be a bit trick sometimes.[last year]
The road behind this gate was not the trail we wanted, nor was it the one we thought we were on... it was just some random fire road that wasn't on our map and petered out a couple miles up. We should have just obeyed the sign, I guess...[last year]
Happy November! It's my anniversary month, and we have something pretty exciting planned towards the end for it. Today was somewhat uneventful in photography, but I found this neat VW Beetle that looked like it had been through quite a few paint jobs, but they were all wearing off. I felt a little bad for it.[last year]
Antonio doesn't always dress up like a panda, but when he does, it's pretty awesome.
Happy halloween everyone![last year]
Bleh, a desperation shot of my hand and our modem. [last year]
Although I worked pretty long hours, I'm happy I walked around outside for a bit. I accomplished a lot, too - it was a good day. I'd say the worst part of the day was probably in the evening when I got attacked by a dog. I'm OK, but I'm going to have a pretty awesome bruise from that... fun stuff.[last year] it's a cutie!...
iPhone panorama of the inside of T.E.U.C.L.A. on campus (Torqued Ellipse). It's a massive circular sculpture that's hard to capture up close. This photo of it doesn't help, but I thought it was fun.[last year]
Sweet & Savory
Also known as Chicago-style: caramel on the left, cheddar on the right. Yum all over.[last year]
Today's hike was in Griffith Park, about 8 miles. I hiked from the Los Feliz side up to Griffith Observatory and then to the top of Mount Hollywood. Turns out that's not very far, so I kept going down the other side, kind of wandering.
I found this cool rock outcropping, but it was all fenced off. Of course, there was a hole cut in it so you could still climb around with the risk of falling and dying. [last year]
I just saw Gravity. Amazing... it had a lot of hype, but it totally lives up to it. I want to watch it again. Last time I re-watched a movie while it was still in theaters was District 9. I went by myself, so hopefully I can go again with my wife.
Oh right, also I took this photo while I waited for the bus. Looks like it's been there for a little while.[last year]
