_12/15/09_ Takeoff Today was a great day. I passed my 2nd (of 2) certification tests, had the last staff meeting of the year at work, left early, visited Kenneth Hahn park and LAX to take photos, and then picked up my wife and got dinner at an amazing burger joint we hadn't tried yet. Phew. The view from Kenneth Hahn was better than on Sunday, but still not good enough. This photo is from LAX, taken from Clutter's Park in El Segundo that provides a great overlook of the airport. The streak is a plane taking off. It's interesting how many different colored lights there are. [last year]

Today was my last day of work for 2 weeks - the campus is shut down for the winter break. I ended up being the last one in the building, which was a little strange.
We had a great holiday potluck - I contributed these chocolate-covered pretzels (hand-dipped!). I'm sad because the focus is a little off, but I really like the out of focus sprinkles.

As an IT professional, there are days where I am sitting, staring at a computer screen for most of the 8 or so hours. Today was not one of those days. A coworker and I moved a bunch of equipment from one building to another, including a 100-lb 58 inch TV that was mounted to the wall. I'm quite exhausted.
I quickly grabbed this shot of the sunset as I walked home from the bus stop. I like that the stop sign is silhouetted, but it's still obvious what it is.

This is a restaurant in Westwood that I went to with about 30 of my coworkers. We ate delicious pasta, salad and pizza. Since we were such a large group, they stuck us on the 2nd floor, so this was my view. It was a pretty boring photo to begin with, so I did a little playing around in Photoshop.
I'm preparing for another test tomorrow morning, otherwise I probably would have tried to get a better source photo for today.

This, my friends, is a sunset. They are often seen when the daily rotation of the Earth takes the sun out of our view and it begins to get dark, since it is the sun that provides us light. I imagine most of you are familiar with this phenomenon.
This shot was taken from Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in LA. My intention was a downtown LA photo with snow-covered mountains, but it was very cloudy - it's not the first time that's happen to me. Instead I turned toward the ocean and setting sun, having to climb a pile of mulch to shoot over a fence. The spots in the foreground are just puddles. I corrected the distortion from shooting wide at 18mm in Photoshop and did a little contrast adjustment back in Lightroom.

Between Thursday night and Friday morning, a man died in this spot. We saw the police working the scene as we left for work on Friday. He was a local transient and his death was not malicious, but it hits home because this spot is just a couple hundred feet from our condo building.
As you go about your business, don't forget that the holidays are the toughest time of the year for some people, and there are many fellow human beings that need help all year long.

To end a truly uninspired week of daily photos, I offer you the one and ONLY photo I took today. I took it at the Mexican food place we grabbed dinner this evening - Tacos Por Favor. It was much better than the place across the street called Burritos? No, Gracias. I liked how the straws appeared to be exploding out of their container. I probably could have gotten a cooler shot of just the straws, but I was in peoples way and felt awkward taking this photo.
And for the sarcasm-challenged, there isn't really a place across the street from it. The food was good though, we'll definitely be back. We miss the familiar Mexican fast food joints in Tucson.

What's that you say? Poinsettias are red? Well, I didn't like the way the iPhone captured the saturated red color, so I modified it a bit. I think it looks cool, although a bit unnatural. I wish I had more time to shoot something interesting, but I'm pretty tired.
Also, I passed my test this morning! I have another one on Tuesday...
