No relation to the smoke monster of Lost. This one was creating using burning incense, a black cloth background and an off-camera flash with a snoot.
I took about 50 shots before deciding I had something worth posting. In fact, I had quite a few interesting ones, but this stood out by far. The complexity of the tumultuous center, offset by gentle waves coming off of both sides just looks really cool to me. I really love smoke as a subject, and can't believe I've only done one other daily photo with it, and that was quite a while ago.
I love looking through the photos and seeing all sorts of things - faces, birds, angels, snakes, and perfect spirals. To name a few...
I also published a blog post with photos about Empire Ranch in Southern Arizona.

Tonight my wife and I walked to get some dessert at a McDonald's that was recently remodeled. It was pretty nice! Some of the decor was a little odd and it felt weird in general, but definitely nicer than a normal McDonald's.
I took this shot of a guy working on his laptop as we sat and enjoyed our hot fudge sundaes. With extra fudge, of course.

After seeing the beautiful spotty clouds on my bike ride home, I decided to go all the way to the coast to get this shot. Sadly, the clouds were cooler just a few minutes earlier, but I could only ride so fast... This is in Palisades Park in Santa Monica.
The clouds are courtesy of an oncoming storm, hopefully we'll get some rain tonight.

This colorful cloth is from Bolivia - my parents got it for us when they visited last year. We're using it as a tablecloth, so I thought a glass of water would give it some context while distorting the lines a bit. The off-camera flash is only about a foot away from the glass, pointing back at it.

Although I did a lot of things today, take photos was not one of them. I got this shot on a bike ride along the coast, which left a very prominent green streak from the sun. This is inverted, of course, so it's pink. Hopefully I'll be a little more inspired this coming week, and maybe even break out the SLR (I haven't used it since the 1st).

Today I helped some friends move to a new apartment. This is the front of my car, parking in the alley. I liked the window effect of the walkway. Added some clarity and other adjustments to make it pop a little more.

Farewell Bomb Shelter. I shall not miss your crappy food.
This is a lamp at said shelter, which is a food-place at UCLA. Everything's cleared out of it because they're starting demolition soon to make way for something presumably much better. In the meantime, they're sending gourmet taco trucks to the area to feed the masses.
I added some color, contrast and clarity modifications in Lightroom.

Riding my bike along San Vicente Blvd, I encountered a wall of cold, wet fog. What looked really neat was the car headlights as they passed behind the coral trees in the median. As you can see, the iPhone was not the best choice to capture this light. I was kind of sad.
The upside is that I now know that I can get some cool shots if I come back here with my SLR next time it gets super-foggy.
