Today I have a very over-processed photo of a statue in UCLA's sculpture garden. I'm in an all-week computer training and I think it's sucking the creativity out of me. It's OK, I suppose, but I was a little disappointed. Hopefully I'll get some good shots tomorrow.

Today I have a very over-processed photo of a statue in UCLA's sculpture garden. I'm in an all-week computer training and I think it's sucking the creativity out of me. It's OK, I suppose, but I was a little disappointed. Hopefully I'll get some good shots tomorrow.

This photo is of a large steel sculpture at UCLA by Richard Serra, a minimalist sculptor who likes to use oxidized sheet metal. I tried to find an interesting angle and I liked the curves seen here. The reddish rust color has been greatly exaggerated in Lightroom.

Tonight I experimented with photographing my djembe, a type of African drum. Much like my recent cow horn photo, I wondered what it would look like if illuminated from the inside.
I tried a lot of angles and perspectives, but ended up positioning the camera straight above. This photo has actually been rotated 180 degrees - saving me from having to climb inside of my tripod legs to get my hand in there. I also had to prop the djembe up a few inches so my flash could peek out and be triggered remotely. I used a small amount of onboard flash to fill in the hand. The radial blur was not part of the original plan - since my camera was pointed straight down, the heavy 18-200mm lens started zooming in, courtesy of gravity. I played around and figured out how to use that to my advantage. In Lightroom, used split toning to get the greenish look and added a bit of clarity to get nice definition in the skin of the drum.
I really should have taken a photo of the setup... but it's too late now, sorry!
Also, I added a Catalina Island gallery, where we went 2 weekends ago. No captions yet, but I'll get to that.

Wife and I did movie and dinner tonight in Culver City. We saw State of Play - it's good! Right next to the theater is the historic Culver Hotel, built in 1924. It's a great building and it'd be fun to go take more photos of it, including the inside. This shot was taken on Southwest point of the building (it's triangle-shaped). I partially desaturated all colors except greens to emphasize the classic sign. I'm happy I was able to get a sharp handheld shot with my compact.

This is a single exposure of my hand lit with a powerful flashlight, and the resulting reddish glow on a lamp with a CFL (compact flourescent). I was playing around a lot and this is the best I came up with tonight. My hand is blurry because I couldn't hold it perfectly still for half of a second, but hey, I'll bet you can't either. I didn't like the red color that came out of the camera, so I played with white balance to get this more orangy-greenish look. The amount of noise is pretty bad, but I didn't like the look I got using noise reduction.

I watched a demonstration of Photoshop CS4 for photographers today, and I was inspired to play with the improved panorama feature. This is out of character for me - almost every photo I post is in the original dimensions, even if it's cropped. I'm impressed with the result though - this is a pano of 5 shots taken hand held with my compact SD400. After work I rode my bike to Palisades Park in Santa Monica and took a few sets for a potential panorama. I'm not sure if this is really my favorite, I haven't gotten to the other ones yet, but it's time for bed, so this one wins as the daily. I do like the non-standard angle though.

Happy Earth Day! Also, stand up for science!
Today's photo is not from a pro-earth rally, but a pro-research rally. I don't want to get into the details here, but I attended to show support for the medical researchers that have come under attack by extremists. The researcher that got people organized at UCLA recently had his car set on fire while it was parked at his house. The guy speaking here started the Pro-Test group in the UK. I got the shot while standing next to the "real" photographers :)
Gpssue asked about what I use for macro shots in reference to yesterday's post. All I have is Nikon's 60mm f/2.8 "micro" lens. Dunno why they can't call it macro like the rest of the world. I bounced my flash off the ceiling for the light, using the smallest aperture I could before the image got dark.

A macro shot of a shell necklace - I love the fine detail on these.
I got this necklace from a Seri woman in Mexico on a sea kayaking adventure trip through the UA when I was a student. The Seri are an indigenous people that traditionally lived on Isla Tiburon (shark island) in the Sea of Cortez, but now live on the mainland. They are unique because their language is not related to any others and is considered a linguistic isolate - neat! Anyways, after our kayaking trip, we visited their town, and the vans were swarmed by mostly women trying to sell us crafts. I bought an ironwood carving of a stingray and a few of these necklaces. Not sure why I haven't photographed them before...

The alley by our house features this large cinder block wall, about 20 feet high in some places, and I wanted to experiment with it's potential. I put the flash right up against it to get the texture, and first I tried jumping into the air right as the flash went off, but it was too hard to get the timing right on my own. Maybe another time when someone can help me out.
So, I settled on a still self portrait! I cropped, desaturated and played with the contrast in Lightroom.
