Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Steel chain. Still not feeling well today, so it was mainly a desperation shot. Didn't have the energy to shoot something more creative, oh well!

I'm not feeling too well today, so I decided to take a desperation shot without getting up from my chair. This pile of CD Cases was the most interesting thing I could find. Obviously I did some photoshopping, including adding a little ripple. I suppose it could an interesting background for something...

We're back from our Joshua Tree trip! Still sorting through photos, but I did post the 3 dailies that I missed for lack of an internet connection. Today I shot my newly purchased Giotto Rocket-Air blower. It was a bit of a desperation shot, although it does look pretty cool. I had some really disappointing sensor dust on all of my Joshua Tree photos, so I was inspired to go buy some cleaning supplies.

Today was our last day in Joshua Tree National Park, and after we drove through, we headed to Palm Springs to ride on the aerial tramway that takes you more than a vertical mile from the desert floor to the forest peak. It was amazing, even though we could barely see anything - it was pouring rain at the bottom, and freezing snow at the top, as this sign attests to. We hope to go back when the weather is more cooperative!

Day 2 in Joshua Tree National Park. Today Ann and I climbed Ryan Mountain, which is only 1.5 miles, but you gain 1100 feet, so it's quite a workout. From the top, you get absolutely amazing views all around you, including this one. In the foreground is Queen Valley, and you can see all of the Joshua Trees dotting the landscape. This was one of my favorite areas of the park, it really feels like you're in another world. I also like this view because of the graduated visibility of the mountains in the background.

Today was our first day in Joshua Tree National Park, and I tried to make a Valentine-themed photo. A wonderful place to watch the sunset is Keys View, which has amazing views of the entire Coachella Valley, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio peaks, provided the air quality isn't horrible. Well, it was pretty bad today, so I got a shot facing East, where this couple was watching the sun go down. It was freezing, hence the sleeping bag. I have no idea who they are, in case you're wondering.
Don't forget, today is also Arizona statehood day!

Magnolia flower after today's rain. I got several other shots, but this was the most unique.
I processed in Lightroom to get the color and contrast right. I like how there are 3 distinct colors, and the dramatic shape of the red center of the flower. There are magnolia trees in bloom all over UCLA, they're beautiful. See my flowers and plants gallery for a few more.

As mentioned in Wednesday's caption, my wife and I are going to Joshua Tree this weekend, so while I'll be taking photos, they won't be uploaded until Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for the link dakotacowboy, you have some great pics! I'll be sure to post a gallery of them here, not just the 3 dailies.

Happy birthday to 2 great historical figures. Darwin and Lincoln! They both would be 200 years old if they were alive. Here is a portrait of Darwin with a first edition of On The Origin Of Species, published in 1859! In case you're curious how I got access to something like that, I work in a library that owns many rare books and it was on display today in honor of Darwin's 200th birthday. Very cool!

UPDATE: I modified the caption - I originally thought that Lincoln was born in a different year, oops!

Bee on some flowers, shot with my compact. I got this shot by brute force, taking about 30 shots and hoping one came out OK. My favorite part of this shot is how sharp the left wing came out.

In other news, my wife and I are going to Joshua Tree National Park this weekend - we've never been there. Any recommendations from those who have?
