Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Now that we're married, Ann and I thought it was just plain silly to have 2 CD collections, so we decided to combine and organize them all. We bought some fun orange drawers from the Container Store and ordered some CD sleeves from sleevetown.com, which were delivered today. We still have a lot more filing to do, but we finished one drawer.
The CD I partially pulled out is Free Fall by Jesse Cook. He's an amazing guitarist that does a lot of flamenco and world music and this is my favorite CD of his. If you like world music at all, you should definitely check him out.

I'd play the "what is it?" game, but I think I processed the photo too much for anyone to get it. I think it looks like some sort of primordial soup, with lots of little organisms swimming around and combining into a cool spirally type of thing. Very scientific, I know.
It's actually a macro photo of a copper mesh scouring pad. I shined a small flashlight on it and used spot metering to get the focused lighting. Once I had the image, I used the find edges filter to bring out the... edges! Then i inverted it and played with hue/saturation and curves to get it how I wanted.

Like last Thursday's photo, here's another super-symmetrical shot. This waffle pancake pan was a wedding gift that came with pancake mix and REAL maple syrup! Can't wait to use it. The packaging says "You no longer have to choose between waffles and pancakes for breakfast." Ha!
I took this shot from directly above, with an external flash placed just outside the top of the image, pointed towards the pan, as you can probably tell from the shadows.

Harpy inauguration day!
We had a belated New Year's party at work today; decorations included this awesome misprinted sign. Not exactly a photo I'd hang on my wall, but it's pretty funny.

Spice rack! This was a wedding gift, and so far it's been pretty useful! Far superior to fumbling around a bunch of unorganized and different-sized containers.
I desaturated and inverted the image, then played around with curves to bring out the detail in the highlights (which were originally dark tones). Sadly, chili powder has no significance, it just happened to be in the spot where I wanted the focus. This is pretty much a desperation shot :)

Chrysanthemum macro, taken from some flowers we picked up earlier today. Used an external flash and a white piece of paper as a reflector. Played around with curves and contrast in Lightroom, too.

Little green-eyed fly on a flower in Zuma Canyon near Malibu. We went hiking today and the harsh midday sun didn't allow for any good scenic photos. The hike was fun though, with lots of ocean views. The air was fairly clear, and we were able to see Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara and San Clemente islands (although we just barely made out San Clemente).

Chocolate cake with white frosting and white chocolate shavings.
It was one of my coworker's birthdays today, and this was dessert! It was quite tasty, but if I'd known it was going to be my photo of the day, I would have tried to be a little fancier with the shot.
It was funny because we didn't have plates so we cut up the cake box for everyone as a substitute. That turned out to be a poor idea, as we only ate 1/2 the cake and didn't have any way to carry it.

A super-symmetrical shot of the new Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center. It opened last June and was praised as the most state-of-the-art hospital in the country. It's right next to my work and has beautiful architecture, but yet I've never even been inside. I shot this while going to a dentist appointment in an adjacent building, I liked how the sunlight faded into shadow as the building curved.
I walked around to get the perfect angle so that it would be symmetrical. I purposely shot at a wider angle than necessary so I would have ample room to crop and rotate as needed. I added quite a bit of sharpening to bring out the details in the travertine, which are best seen in the larger sizes.
Just fyi, these windows all have ocean views. Pretty nice!
