_11/14/09_ Coliseum Panorama Today was USC's homecoming and although I work for the arch-rival UCLA, my wife went to graduate school here, and we've made it a tradition to go to the football game. Today was awful, they lost to Stanford 55-21. Oh well. Around the start of the 3rd quarter I climbed to the top of section 11 to get this 7-shot panorama, using my compact. Check out the guy in the lower left corner - he's shooting Nikon and I think he has a 500mm lens, but it could be something else. It was a nice clear day, so you can easily see downtown LA in the distance. [last year]

Or alternatively, Head Fountain. A bit creepy, this steel head faces the sky and water comes out its nostrils and mouth, dripping into the pool behind its head. It was in a very interesting part of the LA Central Library - an outdoor public art space that detailed the rise of language and other things. This head actually had nothing to do with that - it was just a left over piece that the artist wanted to use.
We got a lot of interesting tidbits of information today on our library tour. Read more about it on my BLOG! That's right. I started a blog. You know, to set myself apart from everyone else on the web.

These colorful scarves were on sale near my office. Pretty much a desperation shot. One thing that surprised me was how saturated the pink scarf came out. There's much more detail in the other colors.

These light on the left mounts on my handlebars so people don't turn into me. The light on the right attaches to my backpack and prevents people from running me over from behind. So far they are 100% effective.
I changed the hue from red to blue in Photoshop, after cranking up the contrast in Lightroom.

Yeah, or something. It's a bunch of small plants that were surrounding a ground light.
More interesting is that I took the photo in front of the offices of Wilson Jacobsen, developers who work with industrial buildings and make them into eco-friendly offices and homes. Or something like that.
Anyways, my last name is Wilson and my mother's maiden name is Jacobson, so it was kind of weird to stumble across. Too bad they didn't know how to spell Jacobson correctly.

I wonder what this view costs.
This fancy building is on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, just North of San Vicente Blvd. I assume it's condos. Point Dume is the bump on the left in the distance - it marks the Northernmost point of the Santa Monica bay.
I set my camera on a fencepost and put the strap underneath to steady it and get it level. It took quite a bit of wrangling to get right, but it was necessary for the 20-second exposure. I think it worked out.

Grabbed this shot of a tall tree right at sunset as I left my office for the day. Did some editing in Lightroom, including lowering the clarity to give the leaves a softer look.

My lovely wife at the beach next to the Santa Monica pier. We went there this morning before one of our friends had to catch a plane back to the Northern part of the state where she's not too close to the ocean. We had fun walking around in the sand and surf.
Pretty much the only thing I did to get this shot was use spot metering on Ann's face. I'm happy the pier came so well-defined out in the background. If I took this shot again, I would frame it so her head was above the horizon, but otherwise I really like this shot.

This trio of lamps is at Buddha's Belly in Santa Monica. I moved the camera around while taking the shot to get some interesting motion.
Tomorrow we're going to the USC homecoming game (vs Stanford) with some friends from out of town that are staying with us. We did our favorite Santa Monica food circuit - Buddha's Belly, followed by Xooro for dessert. So tasty...
