The clock in the main reading room of Powell Library at UCLA. I had wanted to get a shot of the whole room but it's just too big for my 18mm lens, so I tried to focus on this neat clock. I really like it because the strange angles of the ornate, vaulted ceiling alongside the featureless wall make it hard to tell what the perspective is.

We got a storm today, but there wasn't much rain. Mostly wind and clouds like these. I grabbed this shot close to sunset and the biggest thing I did to get this look was to push the "blacks" slider in LR up to 100. It did a great job of bringing out the details in the clouds.

Got this shot of a ... lamp, I guess? It was in the window of a store on Main street in Santa Monica. I'm impressed with the image quality, considering it was shot with my compact, through a window.

Happy first day of spring! Happy vernal equinox! Happy Persian new year! Happy... I'll stop there.
I have another flower shot for you, but this one is pretty dark compared to yesterdays. I had a super-busy day and didn't get much time to shoot, but I grabbed this at lunch because I liked the iris' shadow on the rock. Did quite a bit of editing in Photoshop.
Also, GO WILDCATS! They just beat Utah to advance to the 2nd round!

Closeup of a flower in the botanical gardens. This plant is in a few different locations, but it wasn't marked where I took the photo, so I'm not sure what it is. I'll try and find out and update the post. I made some modifications in LR to give more of a soft focus and lighter colors.
By the way, for all of you that shoot Nikon, I highly recommend checking out D Town TV, a short video show that talks about Nikon dSLRs, hosted by two of the Photoshop User TV guys.

Happy St. Patrick's day! I was impressed to see so many green daily photos! My photo is not green, and not really festive.
Our friend Joe is still in town, and just like yesterday we went out to dinner by the beach, but today we went to Venice instead of Santa Monica. We ate at the C&O Trattoria, which is a really fun (and tasty) Italian place. Partway through our meal the waiters handed out lyric sheets and we all sang "That's Amore!"
As we were walking along the beach, I noticed this guy playing the guitar on a lifeguard station right as the sun was going down. I cropped quite a bit to get a better composition and upped the saturation a tad, but the colors are accurate (unlike yesterday's photo).

We have a friend visiting for a few days, so we took him to downtown Santa Monica for dinner and to check out the pier. Right after sunset, I grabbed this shot of 2 palm trees. The sunset was very nice, but the photo was very bland, so I started playing around with white balance and other color tools. I tweaked it until I got something I liked.

I splurged a little at the seasonal section of the grocery store and picked up some "Robin Eggs" which are little egg-shaped Whoppers. I also got some egg-shaped Reese's Pieces, but we like those better, so they were all eaten by the time I got around to taking this desperation shot.
I arranged the candy in no particular order on our glossy white stove, and bounced the flash so they'd be backlit. I lowered the clarity in Lightroom to get the soft look. If I were to take the shot again, I'd spend more time figuring out an interesting arrangement, but I'd definitely stick with the lighting.
