Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

_03/14/09_ Sushi Night
We went to a friends house tonight and made sushi! A few of us had done it long before, but it was a mostly new experience for everyone, but it turned out great! This is a shot of the cucumbers getting sliced up to use in the California rolls. We had a great time eating, chatting and playing Wii Fit. I did OK on the ski jump and failed on the soccer ball thing, but I think that's OK for a newbie.
I also grabbed a nice shot of our friends' hamster, Knoxville!

_03/13/09_ Montrose Bowl
Went bowling for a friend's bday party and she also just passed a big test! It's this cozy place called Montrose Bowl that she rented out. It advertises itself as a "50's Style Bowling Alley." There's only 8 lanes, and it definitely has an old-fashioned feel to it.
I like that the thumbnail just says "ow" :)

_03/12/09_ Green Screen
This is the only photo I took today, so I'm happy it's not a complete throwaway. A building was recently torn down near my house, and I grabbed this shot of the new construction fence as we walked by. I wouldn't really like this photo except for the subtle palm tree silhouette, I think that makes it interesting. I made some contrast adjustments, but otherwise didn't do much processing.

_03/11/09_ California Poppies
These beautiful orange poppies are all over the botanical gardens, although the place to see them is Antelope Valley at the Poppy Reserve, but I've never been. Google it to see some awesome pics. I played around a lot in Photoshop for this one, using a radial blurs, masks, opacity and the color range selection tool.
Also today, I made sure both my D80 and SD400 were set properly for DST! Don't forget to do this! I also downloaded updates for Lightroom and Photoshop that came out recently. Just a friendly reminder :)

_03/10/09_ Suspicious Soup
Had some tomato soup tonight and snapped a quick photo before eating it. The photo wasn't too exciting on it's own, so I changed the color on the basil and dill to blue - it wasn't really this color (shocker!). It's not the best mask because there's still some green that was hard to get rid of, especially in the upper left corner, but I don't have that much time to spend masking. I mainly used the color range tool to get the selection.

_03/09/09_ Bottoms Up
This honey bee is sticking out of a Japanese Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) from China. Why is it not a Chinese Flowering Quince? I have no idea, but that's what the sign says.
I got this exposure by using the built-in flash and dialing in -1 EV. I got a similar effect with my SLR and SB-800 for this cherry tree photo. Fill flash = a good thing! I'm glad I'm using it more, especially since midday is when I usually get a chance to shoot.

_03/08/09_ Chain Reaction
Happy DST day! Not really, though, because I hate DST.
My wife and I went on a bike ride from Santa Monica to Venice this afternoon, and on the way back we noticed this really cool sculpture near Santa Monica city hall. It's called Chain Reaction (1991) by Paul Conrad and if I'd taken a photo of the entire thing, you'd see that it's shaped like a mushroom cloud. A plaque at the base says "This is a statement of peace. May it never become an epitaph."

_03/07/09_ Furry Boxes
These cute little boxes are from Bangladesh, gifts from my mom who went there last October. They're quite colorful and unique with fur on the lid.
The light off the wood dresser was similar to the color of the boxes and made the photo much less dramatic, so I masked the boxes in Photoshop and desaturated the rest of the photo. I used the highest aperture I could while still getting an acceptable exposure, limited by the power of the bounce flash.

I think "violent" is a good description for this shot. I'm never totally happy with my agave captures (there's a lot of it in the botanical gardens), but I think this comes close. Some of the plants are just so dangerous looking...
This is a macro shot with my compact, grayscaled and duo-toned. I like how the excess of thorns and thorn shadows contrast with the soft spots on the leaves.
