Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

This is our house's newest plant, a 'bicolor' (Dracaena marginata).
I set the camera on a tripod a few feet away from the plant and pointed down at it. I took the shot by using the self-timer and walking around with my off-camera flash and pointed it down at the plant from behind. Getting the entire plant in the frame would have been nice, but the rug wasn't big enough, and I wanted a consistent background.

We caught this great orange sunset at the end of an afternoon at green sticks... by which I mean the Palos Verdes peninsula near/in Los Angeles. We had a great time eating a delicious picnic lunch and walking around the bluffs and we even spotted a couple whales. I think - without binoculars it's hard to distinguish whale spouts from dive-bombing pelican splashes. This photo was taken from Abalone Cove, and the buildings on the bluffs are part of the Terranea resort.

![__01/21/11__ Skeleton Leaf
I found an enormous half-decayed leaf in the botanical gardens today, so I took some photos of it. I wasn't expecting to like this one so much, but I do. It's cropped but otherwise straight from the camera. I like the muted colors, but I really like the effect of the out of focus trees above through the veins of the leaf. Fun times.

Update: Thanks for all the comments, I'm glad you guys like it too! I took arctangent's advice and cropped out the blade of grass at the bottom. I was hesitant because I had already cropped the photo, but I think this is a stronger image, even though I'm a little sad it's under 5MP now.

This belonged to my parents-in-law, who aren't exactly hippies, but to me, it looks like something that you'd find hanging in a VW Bus with shag carpet. Just sayin'.
I used the same setup as I've been using for my water droplet photos - the chime was hanging from a curtain rod resting across a white presentation foam board. I had trouble getting the lighting right with only one flash, so I decided to make the shadow a part of the scene. My off-camera flash is just underneath and in front of the bottom bell, pointing mostly at the back of the presentation board. I played around and adjusted the level so that the shadow cast by my on-camera flash would fade into white about halfway down.

Quick desperation shot today - it's a strainer with soap bubbles (I was washing it) that I set in front of my off-camera flash. I added Lightroom 3's Split Tone 2 preset and tweaked it a bit.

I'm not sure this photo does the plant justice, but here you go. The Devil's Thorn (Solanum pyracanthum) is awesome - the leaves have bright orange thorns sticking out every direction, I've never seen anything like it. I suppose that's what I should expect from a plant from Madagascar.

Water Drops, Day 4
My fourth water droplet photograph! The splash formation is similar to my 1/14/11 photo, but today I changed up the lighting and used colored milk instead of water. I wish I could say that this photo is unaltered but even with tons of food coloring, the SOOC photo was a bit dull. The photo has been cropped a bit, and the white balance changed to give more a blue/aqua color.
Oh yeah, of course I have a setup photo. I think I'll probably do one more photo with some more experimentation, and then I'll compile all my hard-learned lessons into a blog post.

Water Drops, Day 4
My fourth water droplet photograph! The splash formation is similar to my 1/14/11 photo, but today I changed up the lighting and used colored milk instead of water. I wish I could say that this photo is unaltered but even with tons of food coloring, the SOOC photo was a bit dull. The photo has been cropped a bit, and the white balance changed to give more a blue/aqua color.

Yesterday, my wife and I attempted to take down a decorative floor-to-ceiling glass wall, but we had to be very careful because we have a glass shower door that we wanted to not destroy. After hours of drilling and chiseling at the grout, we gave up. It was virtually impossible to get any of the blocks out intact, so the whole column remained as one.
Today we bought some red duct tape, covered one of the blocks, and smashed it with a hammer. After that, the rest came out easy. I wonder if the same method might be effective at work with computers.

This lovely glass full of little shells can be found in our bathroom, like so many bathrooms.
Setup: I set the glass on a piece of large white paperboard to get a background with no seams. On the right, I set the back of the foam board I used in yesterday's shot and pointed my off-camera flash at it, so it would bounce off. On the left, I set up a black cloth to avoid reflections. I intentionally overexposed, and then tweaked a little in Lightroom.
