Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

After a long day of conferencing, a coworker and I headed to Chinatown to get dinner at the fabulous House of Nanking. On the walk back, I grabbed this shot of one of their highly stylized lamps.

Today I traveled to San Francisco for a conference for the rest of the week. I had a few hours to see some sights, so I decided to cross the Cable Car Museum off my list. It was awesome!
So basically there are four cable car lines, and each one has it's own cable that runs underneath the street. The cables run constantly, and the cars just grab onto them when they need to move. The building where the museum is houses the giant motors that keep the cables running. It's pretty incredible to see and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting, especially if you're going to ride the cable cars.
This is the best photo I got from the museum - a closeup of a giant coil of cable. I had no idea, but apparently the cables wear out very quickly and have to be replaced multiple times a year.

Desperation shot of a colorful and oh-so-soft blanket. I almost forgot to take a photo today - I spent a large portion of the day going through Death Valley photos, which I will share with you shortly. I made sure to get the bulk of the editing done today, because I am leaving on another (!) trip tomorrow morning. It'll be a short visit to San Francisco for a conference, but I hope to see at least a few sights while I'm there.

Death Valley, Day 5
After a lovely three days of touring around Death Valley NP, we headed home. On our way out, we stopped by the Mesquite Flat sand dunes, right near Stovepipe Wells. The place was crawling with photographers, much like Zabriskie Point was. My wife and I headed off in a direction that no one else was going so we could find some pretty sand with no footprints. In the end, I liked this detail shot better than any sweeping vistas.

Death Valley, Day 5

Death Valley, Day 4
To celebrate our 3 year anniversary, my wife and I drove around Death Valley - the actual valley, not just the national park in general. We took Badwater Road all the way down to the Ashford Mill ruins, and then came back up the other side of the valley on West Side Road. Our first stop of the day was the Devil's Golf Course, which was a huge surprise - it was awesome. We weren't sure what to expect, but basically it's these crazy salt formations that grow and change with the heat and moisture. It's adjacent, but completely different than the Badwater salt flats. It's hard to walk on - you have to carefully plan every step - and it goes on as far as you can see.
I was lucky with this photo - right as I was setting up, the sun peeked over the Amargosa mountains and gave me some lovely lighting. Being in that crazy landscape and seeing the shadow of the mountain move over us was a pretty great experience.

Death Valley, Day 3
If you've heard of it before, you probably recognize this as a photo of the Racetrack. If you haven't, let me tell ya:
The Racetrack is a mud playa in Death Valley National Park, where the rocks move. No one has ever seen it happen and no one has been able to prove how it happens, but the evidence is right there - huge rocks with long mud trails behind them. The theory is that when the playa gets wet, it gets slippery enough that high winds are able to push the rocks around. It's a truly amazing place and I enjoyed every minute that we spent there.
The road to it is not easy. You need an SUV at the very least - a lot of people rent Jeeps to make the trip. It's a long trip, too - took us most of the day, and we left pretty darn early.
Here's what the National Park Service Sign says:
"The moving rocks are something of a mystery. Scientists theorize that when this ancient lake bed - or playa - gets wet, it becomes so slippery that winds can move rocks weighing 100 pounds or more. Others suggest that winds move the rocks only when ice helps them raft along a temporary lake surface."

Death Valley, Day 3
If you've heard of it before, you probably recognize this as a photo of the Racetrack. If you haven't, let me tell ya:
The Racetrack is a mud playa in Death Valley National Park, where the rocks move. Death Valley, Day 2
Happy Thanksgiving! We had a lovely dinner at the posh Furnace Creek Inn in Death Valley.
Earlier in the day, we got up for the sunrise at Zabriskie Point, which was full of photographers. This isn't the typical view, but I felt like pointing my camera in a different direction than everyone else - I'm glad for it, as the clouds weren't nearly as neat in the other direction. Zabriskie Point is famous for the way it glows at sunrise, as well as being an awesome view of the colorful badlands in general.

The drive wasn't bad, and we were able to get to Texas Springs campground around 2pm. If it had been much later, we wouldn't have gotten a campsite there.

I rented a Tokina 11-16mm for a trip tomorrow. This photo doesn't quite capture the ultra-wide angle-ness of it, but it's a better composition after cropping it a bit. I tried putting my circular polarizing filter on it, but I didn't like the results - you end up with a dark blue band across the sky. I think I'll leave the filter on my not-quite-as-wide 18-200mm.
Where am I going you ask?! Death Valley! I am planning on doing iPhone daily photos, but I'm not sure I'll be able to upload them in a timely manner. I'm excited for the photo opportunities and to spend my 30th Thanksgiving and 3rd wedding anniversary in a national park. The first two were Yosemite and Hawaii Volcanoes.
