Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

As foretold in yesterday's caption, I took my 300mm f/4 to the zoo today. I had a lot of fun photographing the animals, and there was quite a bit of action. The hippo, Komodo dragon, tigers, orangatans, tortoises, mountain goats and more were all doing stuff! This koala was not, but it's my favorite photo from the day. I mean, look at it! So adorable!
I'm still pretty happy with the lens, but for my upcoming Africa trip I think I might go with the 70-300mm zoom instead. It's a whole stop slower, but it's half the weight of the 300mm f/4. I'll be sure to keep you posted, don't you worry.

This was taken at Huntington Beach, where we met some friends for a lovely bonfire on the beach. Around sunset I excused myself to go walk down to the water with my rented Nikkor 300mm f/4. I'm planning on going to the zoo with it tomorrow, to really put it through its paces. I'm pretty impressed with this lens so far, although it might be too heavy for travel so I'm going to rent the 70-300mm to compare.
In this shot, the Huntington Beach Pier is over a mile away. See the shipping cranes in the distance? I didn't notice them at all when I took the photo; they're over 10 miles away.

I rented a lens today, but was too exhausted to use it for a photo of the day. I'll tell you more about that tomorrow.
Instead, i wanted to pay tribute to all the UCLA students who graduated, fun! Campus was swarming with graduates in black robes and nicely dressed family members, and traffic was atrocious. In fact, some staff are encouraged to leave early or work from home to mitigate the traffic and parking issues. Anyways, I was in a building this afternoon and looked up to see some balloons and quickly grabbed the shot with my phone.

Tonight I played with food coloring in the sink. My first few ideas didn't work AT ALL, but I'm too tired to go into any more detail. This was pretty much the only shot that I liked from the evening. I played with the color and white balance to get what you see here.

How many? I think seven, but it's hard to tell from this angle. These neon bottles don't seem to light up, but the rest of the Santa Monica Liquor sign does. I was inspired to take a photo of this subject after I heard about a photo contest for vintage signs.
Speaking of... numbers... this is my 100th photo for the One/Day Project, Year 4! Only 266 to go. If you're thinking my math is wrong, my year goes until the end of February, and the next time that month rolls around it will have an extra day.

Tonight I shed some shiny plastic tears as I packed up my Legos to send to various eBay people. I had so much fun playing with them, building my own creations, and other stuff. I sold 9 sets in all, but some contained multiple - I think there are at least 25 in all, which includes literally thousands of pieces.
My genre of choice was space, and my... 'team' of choice was Blacktron, pictured here. They were the bad guys, but they had the coolest models. This guy came from my favorite - the Aerial Intruder. I always had a fondness for it that I can't fully describe, but The Little Mermaid might have something to do with that. I had a few Space Police models as well, and they usually came with a Blacktron dude in lockup. I almost had the complete series of Blacktron - everything except the base or space station or whatever it was called. Unfortunately it was around $200, making it far above any standard birthday or Christmas present allotment.
I'm sad to see them go, but I wish them well. Farewell, Legos! Bring another nerdy kid some joy!

I took a walk down to the ocean this evening around sunset to get some photos. There wasn't much of a sunset - a small storm brought lots of clouds in, but as you can see the horizon was pretty clear. I played with water shots and slower shutter speeds, and quickly determined that oncoming waves are much cooler than receding waves.
Yes, I got wet from this photo. That's the price you pay for this vantage point. Luckily the camera stayed mostly dry.

I went out to dinner with some friends tonight in Culver City. As we were leaving, a group of about 100 bicyclists rode by, including this guy. It happened kind of quickly, so I had to leave the camera on P mode and just tried to pan with the action. I got a few interesting shots, but I like this once because of the obvious subject - some of the others had too many bicycles in them and it was just a total mess.
