Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Happy National Doughnut Day! Did you have one to celebrate? I had two. OK, fine, two and a half. Plus a bagel, which is basically a savory doughnut.
The first one was at work, and the second (and a half) were from this place, our local doughnut shop that's open 24/7. It's a wonderful thing. If the rest of the label was in the photo, you'd see that these fluffy french things are crullers. I didn't get one, but maybe next time. Instead I got a Bavarian creme, which was heavenly.

This is what I like to call a premeditated desperation shot - I didn't think I'd be taking many photos today, so I made sure I got something while I was thinking about it. I took this shot of some cool-looking flowers on my way into work. I like the way they grow in distinct bunches.
The coulter bush (Hymenolepis parviflora) is native to South Africa. Since I'm going there in a few months, I'm much more attuned to the plants that are from that area. Southern California is full of them - in fact almost any cool flowering plant or tree you see around here is from there.

Like I mentioned yesterday, I'm selling my Legos on eBay. Yesterday was helmets, today is... a weird shape. I attached these four pieces together and set it on top of my softbox so the lighting from below would bring out the color in the plastic.

Pictured here are six different Lego helmets. Of the helmet owners, four fly spaceships and the other two drive a helicopter and a racecar. All seem like dangerous jobs that you'd need a helmet for.
Why did I take a photo of Lego helmets? Because soon, they'll all be sold on eBay (hopefully). I'm a bit sad to see them go, but they've only collected dust for years and years and years. If I didn't have a job or any other adult responsibilities, I'd love to just sit down and build them all again.
Good times, good times...
Seriously, though - if you know anyone that collects Lego sets or just wants old Legos, send them my eBay.

Impressive waterfall in Escondido Canyon. A very easy and pleasant trail takes you to a small falls after about 1.5 miles, but then you can do a little bit of climbing to get to the upper falls (pictured here) which involves holding onto a rope to get past a steep muddy spot and some light bouldering. In case you're wondering - yes, I was standing in the water to take this photo.

These are the 10 bits that came with a ratcheting screwdriver we have. I stacked them up and took a photo like so.
One exciting thing to point out in the setup shot is my new Joby ballhead. I've had the Gorillapod SLR-Zoom for a while, but I bought a cheap ballhead for it that sucked. I recently upgraded to Joby's own, and it's so much better. Now I have an acceptable tripod for Africa, but more on that later...

I read on the building's webpage that the architecture has nautical features, but from this angle I think it looks like a rocket. I grabbed this shot as my wife and I walked across the street to eat some food while watching the ocean. It was really nice and relaxing.
I used Photoshop to black out the sky, mostly because I couldn't figure out how to mask out a palm tree that was in the shot. I just didn't have enough extra blue sky to clone/paste/stamp over it, and everything I tried looked worse than leaving it in. So now it's all black.
I added some extra black to the top of the photo to make it square because... I was feeling adventurous?

Today I was fortunate to have fire extinguisher training. I actually took the same training a couple years ago and made it my photo of the day then. The training was the same today, but since it includes extinguishing an actual fire, I decided I could use a refresher.
I got this shot of one of the firefighters that was assisting with the class. The cloud of what looks like smoke is the discharge from the extinguisher. I went with a selective color effect to isolate what I found interesting about this shot.
