Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

_04/26/11_ Convex
Here's another B&W for y'all. I went for a short photo walk this evening and came across this garage door on the side of a car dealership. Convex mirrors always catch my eye, but the reflection usually isn't interesting - this one was nice because I could isolate the subject into something that looks sorta cool.

_04/24/11_ Encounter
Happy Easter!
This high-key B&W photo is of the Encounter restaurant at LAX. I think most people are familiar with the iconic building and associate it with LAX, but not too many know that it is simply a restaurant and has nothing to do with airport operations. Maybe one day I'll eat there.
I had some extra time to wander around while my wife was accompanying her mom to the gate for her flight home (only one escort is allowed). I walked to the top of a nearby parking garage to get a higher angle and zoomed in to isolate the subject. It was overcast at the time, making this sort of photo possible. Even so, I did a lot of processing in Lightroom to get the highlights blown out while retaining some definition of the buildings and its arches.

_04/23/11_ Triangles
Today we left Orange City and drove back to Omaha, stopping at this awesome sculpture on the side of Abbott Drive, just South of the airport. I did some searching online, but I could not find out what the piece is called or who the sculptor is. It's pretty amazing though - all metal and about 30 or 40 feet high, it seems to reach for the sky in an organized chaos sort of way.
Other adventures included lunch (dinner?) at the Crescent Moon Ale House, driving through a very nice Omaha neighborhood, and having our Denver connection delayed 2.5 hours. Exhaustion aside, we're happy to be back. We had fun, though - it was neat to see family and learn some history. More Orange City pics coming soon.

_04/22/11_ Grain Storage
Happy Earth Day!
I'm still in Orange City, IA. In case you missed it yesterday, we're here for my grandmother-in-law's 100th birthday! We saw her again this morning and had supper* with her this evening - she didn't miss a beat, despite yesterday's festivities.
We spent most of the day touring around Orange City. We saw the family farm that Wilmina grew up on, we visited a coffee shop that used to be a wooden shoe factory, a dutch meat shop, a dutch gift shop... all sorts of things. Around sunset, we drove over to this grain elevator and I took some photos. It's interesting that this area is so open with few buildings, but then you run into these hulking concrete structures. It was pretty fun to take photos of - I'll share more soon.

*what I call dinner is what they call lunch... also, soda is pop here. Crazy mid-westerners.

_04/21/11_ Centenarian
Today my grandmother-in-law joined a very select group of people that have lived to be 100 years old. Do you like her 'bling' shirt? Happy Birthday Wilmina!
My wife and mother-in-law joined other family (22 in all) out in Orange City, IA, where Wilmina was born and raised, married, had four kids of her own, and will one day be buried in a local cemetery next to her late husband. Despite having two knees and a hip replaced, she walks every day and is remarkably active even for someone 20 years younger.
Her retirement home put on a great program, and people young and old - mostly old :) - enjoyed cake and ice cream. Good times! Besides Wilmina, my wife and I each have another grandmother living - I hope we get to do this again!

_04/20/11_ Blue Sky
This was supposed to be a sunset, but the plane didn't clear the cloud bank until 10-15 minutes afterwards. The flight was Denver to Omaha - I'll be spending some time with my wife's family in Iowa. Stay tuned for tomorrow's photo to see why...

I meant to have another Unlicensed Elmo photo for you today, but I couldn't make it happen. Stay tuned tomorrow for more on that.
My favorite photo I actually took today was this old, weathered door. I like the contrast of the aqua-tinged door handle with the orange paint. I'm curious to know what it looked like when it was brand new...
