Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

The dramatic backdrop behind this pretty little patch of goldfields (Lasthenia californica) is part of Vasquez Rocks. It's a small park with otherworldly rock formations off the 14 freeway near Agua Dulce - between Palmdale and Santa Clarita. We came here as part 2 of a day trip. Part 1 was to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, but the poppies were barely there. We'll definitely have to go back during a better year - apparently they're pretty unpredictable, because we had plenty of rain this winter.

Here's some just-washed kale we picked up from the farmers market this morning. We've never really made kale before, but we're trying to, you know... be healthy or something. We followed a recipe online and it turned out pretty well. It's so colorful, I couldn't resist taking a photo before tearing it apart and cooking it.

Does this photo say 'thrust' to you? It doesn't to me, but the metal sculpture is called Model with Thrust, by sculptor Harold L. Pastorius in 1984. It's right outside my work, but I've never seen a palm frond shadow on it like this morning - it's like it was perfectly following the curves of the sculpture. The contrast of the shadow with the curves of the sculpture really caught my eye, I'm glad I stopped to take the photo - I almost kept going.

So, a few days ago the giant coral tree near my work had a large branch break and it fell onto an area where people walk. Since it was a safety hazard, they taped it off and said there would be an emergency tree trimming to take care of the problem. Guess what - they cut most of it down!!! Coral trees are awesome in general (see my 9/20/10 photo) but this one was particularly cool because of its enormous size. Well I suppose it won't be a problem anymore... Ugh.
Anyways, this photo is of the center of the stump that remains from the section they 'trimmed.' I gathered some of the bright red beans/seeds that come from the tree and sprinkled them around as some sort of tribute. I kind of wish the focus was on the bean in the middle, not the one in the hole, but it was tough to get it right with my compact. I like the shallow depth of field though. These beans are so vibrant, I want to do more with them...
Also, thanks for all the comments on yesterday's shot! My wife liked all the extra bday wishes :)
And in other news, I started a tumblr site - jawsnap.tumblr.com. I plan on using it to post photos I really like. It's a good way to share stuff, and it'll be nice to refer to for inspiration.

Today's my wife's birthday, and as per tradition we went to Yummy Cupcakes to get her complimentary cupcake. This is what she chose, although it wasn't pink. It was chocolate creme pie and was various shades of brown, but I thought that pink would make a more compelling photo. Brown is really just dark orange, so moving the orange color slider all the way to the left in Lightroom gave this effect.
I used my newly acquired Lumiquest LTp softbox to light it.

My wife's birthday is tomorrow, and then she will no longer be this age. I'm a tad older and will be turning the dreaded 30 this year... any ideas for that photo of the day?
For this photo, I used an old typewriter that I keep lying around to type the numbers on construction paper. I lit it with my flash directly above and right next to the paper to really bring out the details. I got as close as my macro lens would let me - it took several tries to get one with proper focus across the entire image.

Another shot with my brand new Lumiquest LTp softbox, and this one comes with a setup photo!
This is a cocktail shaker that my grandfather picked up in Peru while he was stationed there during WWII. It comes with a set of little cups, that say 'esterlina' on the bottom, so I assume it's all made of sterling silver. It's pretty awesome, and someday we'll have a little cocktail party and actually make drinks with it.

This photo is brought to you by my newly acquired softbox - the Lumiquest LTp, named for its ability to fit in laptop bags. For this shot, I had to clean the table so no dust showed up, and I moved it away from the curtains so the light from the flash wouldn't illuminate it. I set my D80 with my 50mm lens on the table and composed the shot and used the self-timer to take it. With the softbox attached, I held the flash just out of view of the camera, right above my two subjects.
I chose the angels to photograph because of all the detail that the softbox should - and did! - bring out. It helped that I used a fairly small aperture - f/13. They sure have animated faces, like they each have a distinct personality.
I'm pretty excited to finally own a piece of 'real' lighting equipment. Expect to see much more of it...

Today we celebrated my wife's birthday in Hollywood, right in the thick of it at Hollywood and Highland. We saw Paul at Grauman's Chinese, which was awesome - the theater was anyways. The movie was good, but nothing amazing. If you're unfamiliar with the theater, read this. This photo is of one of the chandeliers in the lobby.
Afterwards we walked down to Musso and Frank Grill for dinner. It's a bit pricey, but it was really fun - the restaurant has been in continuous operation since 1919. The website has a photo of our waiter with Johnny Depp, among others...
