Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

This is some sort of succulent I found in the botanical gardens. I used the widest aperture available to get a small depth of field and blur the background. In Lightroom added some vignetting, clarity, raised the vibrance, lowered the saturation... fun stuff like that. I really like how subtle the purple and green hues came out.
In other news, I'm trying to have more of a Flickr precense. I don't care much for Flickr, but that's where most of the world seems to share things. I've started with Reject Photos, the ones that didn't make the cut for the One/Day Project. If you use Flickr, add me as a friend!

Palm frond - of the species Erythea elegans to be precise. The wind was blowing and the light was intermittent because of it, so it was a lot of luck that I got this image. I'm quite fond of it.

Today was the LA Marathon - the men's winner ran the fastest marathon in Los Angeles ever, and it was his first time! He also won by a lot, the women's race was much closer. I had hoped to go check it out and take photos, but the rain kept me away. I know I sound lame, but it wasn't just a little rain - it's been raining all freaking day and pretty hard. We have a window that started leaking from half a dozen spots and we had to go outside and nail in a tarp to protect it.
Long story short, I just took a desperation shot outside a window. I did a lot of processing, including adding some blue-ish highlights.

This is Brody at his second year birthday party. I also got the opportunity to take photos at his first birthday party, so he's been in the daily photos before. He did not put on quite as good of a show with this years' cake, but that's OK :)
I like how this photo has a sense of motion with the blurriness, but I must admit it wasn't intentional. 2-year-old Brody is much, much faster than 1-year-old Brody and it was hard to keep up some of the time... or most of the time, really. I've never really shot sports, but I'd imagine that shooting kids is harder. At least most sports are somewhat predictable.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Here is a photo with absolutely no green in it.
It's a spot in the botanical gardens under some pine trees and the squirrel blended perfectly with the brown and tan tones. I tempted him/her towards the camera by pretending I had food and took a bunch of shots.
I hope you don't think I'm mean by only pretending to have food. UCLA squirrels are among the fattest around.

The sprinklers were on as I walked into work this morning, so I grabbed a quick shot. I wish I'd framed it a little better, but the camera was getting wet, so I just took two shots. I did some effects in Lightroom to make it a little more interesting.

Today I caught the Flash Bus Tour at the LA Convention Center. It's all about using off-camera small flash, taught by David Hobby (aka Strobist guy) and Joe McNally. If they're coming to your town, I highly recommend attending. They're both pretty much legends, and although they have dramatically different personalities and teaching styles, it was a pretty awesome class. I learned a ton, but to put it into practice I need to purchase a bunch of equipment. So... feel free to send me some money.
I actually used my off-camera flash for this shot, although it didn't do a whole lot - the bus is quite large. I probably should have gotten on the ground to get a better angle, but I wasn't in the mood for laying on the ground.
