Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

![__01/24/12__ Tokens
These red and blue wooden pieces are 'tokens' in Patolli, A Game of Ancient Mexico. Apparently it really was played by ancient Aztecs - there's all sorts of documentation and drawings in a booklet that accompanies the game. How do you play? I have no idea, I just skimmed it enough to see that these pieces are called tokens.
I hope some of you appreciate the extra step I took to make this photo a little more interesting. Can you spot it?

It rained today, for most of the day. About an hour or so before sunset, it had partially cleared and the sun came out from time to time. For about 5 minutes, there was absolutely gorgeous light, but I wasn't in a place to get a good photo of anything, sadly. I took this shot after the sun went behind clouds for the last time today, but they sky was still very bright and caused quite a contrast reflecting off the wet sidewalk. I liked the symmetry and the varying levels of softness and reflection on the path. Or something like that. You know what I mean.

After a warm, sunny, this-is-why-people-live-here, January day, I headed towards the beach for some sunset photos. I typically go to the Santa Monica pier, so I decided to switch it up and head one pier south to Venice. One huge difference between them is that the beach in Venice is very flat, so the waves come very far inland. When they recede, you have a mirror-like surface that's great for reflections.

Here's my wife, holding a smile while she gets blown back and forth near the ocean. Of course I always like taking photos of her, but this was specifically for the class I mentioned yesterday and a few other times over the past couple weeks. The main takeaway from this shot is that her face is correctly exposed, even though there are several places that are blown out, and of course the background is all but featureless.
We had a storm we had last night that cleared up pretty early in the morning, but the wind has stayed all day. I really like this shot because of the way her hair is blowing - it looks nice. Many of the other photos were quite... chaotic.

Lisa was one of two friends at work that helped me take some photos for the Environmental Portraiture class I'm taking. I was practicing getting subjects with front, side and back light. This photo is deep in the shade, so it's not really any of those situations, but I like the photo.
I only had my S95 on hand, which required a pretty high ISO. Hopefully you can't tell too much.

In other news, I was sad to hear that the LA Zoo's hippo had to be euthanized. I took some photos of it last year in healthier times. I remember being really excited to see it walking around and eating before going back in the water.

Let's start with most exciting news first - I won a SmugMug contest! Yay! I get a calendar as well as some unspecified swag. Fun!
Also, after many months, I made my way back to the Annenberg for a photography lecture. Tonight was Joel Grimes. He got his MFA from the UofA, so I didn't want to miss it. I really like what he said, but I don't particularly care for his style, even though his images are quite awesome. That was one of his points, though - find your uniqueness and focus on that, and you'll stand out. It was a good talk.
Afterwards, I took this photo. The lighted trees in the courtyard are being reflected off of a black metal table.

At first I wanted to post a super dark photo as a blackout protest against SOPA and PIPA, but chose a real photo instead. This is part of a construction crane, specifically the part where it transitions from sun to shade. I processed the photo quite a bit, but I like the look. It's crazy to think that a crane operator starts their day by climbing straight up this thing.
What if you forget something? Or have to pee?

Tonight's sunset was pretty cool, as there was a green flash. I knew I had seen it, but it was further confirmed by a lady next to me that started yelling "I saw it! I saw it!"
