Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

_07/18/11_ White Bamboo
I set my S95 on manual to take this blown-out shot of some lucky bamboo with a curtain as the backdrop. As you may have guessed, this a desperation shot.

_07/17/11_ Misty Mountains
Not exactly Tolkienesque, this is part of the San Gabriel range that overlooks Los Angeles. It was rather hazy and gross to see from above, but it made for a cool photo with my 300mm lens. I'd never used it on a plane and was hoping for some cool close-up shots of things on the ground, but a dirty window and a an over-the-wing vantage point were working against me.
Did you see why I was out of town yesterday? Fun stuff!

_07/16/11_ Nonagenarian
Happy Birthday to Dorothy! Today she turned 90 years young. Behind her on the mantle is a younger version of herself at six months. All four of her kids and most of her grand kids made it out to Tucson to celebrate with her. We had barbeque for lunch (she's from St. Louis) and then headed over to her apartment for cake and ice cream.
It sure is fun celebrating all these landmark birthdays.

_07/15/11_ CARMAGEDDON!!!
It is upon us! Hide your kids, hide your wife! For the love of God, STAY HOME! Please people, take heed! It's going to be TERRIBLE!
It's a little early to say, but if LA really does turn into one giant parking lot tomorrow and Sunday, we can't say we weren't warned. I don't think I've ever been as aware of a single event in my entire life as I am about this freeway closure. It's ridiculous.
Luckily I'll be gone for most of it! I'm flying back to Tucson for a birthday party. Stay tuned to see whose it is...
Oh, also, I took this photo today. This sign is underneath the Wilshire/405 underpass, and the lane it refers to is the on-ramp to the 405 South, one of the many ramps that will be closed for Carmageddon. I didn't like the bus in black and white, so I left the red in.

_07/14/11_ Shadowy Figure
I went to the Annenberg tonight to see Andrew Southam speak about his career in photographing beautiful women. It was pretty interesting, and I'm eager to go back and see the entire Beauty Culture exhibition.
I took this shot of someone coming down the escalator - the light coming from behind them is the reflection of the afternoon sun off of another building at just the right angle.

_07/13/11_ Blue is for Butterfly
And 'door', provided it's a blue door. My friend Rikke is holding up her new Baby's First Colors book (or something like that) that she got at her shower today at work. It was a pot-lucking good time, and we all enjoyed watching her and her husband open their many, many baby-related gifts.
When I first saw the title of hte book I though it implied that the colors were introductory - as if you move onto more advanced colors as they get older. Babies learn things like blue, red and orange. Later they move onto things like mauve and sea foam green. The advanced book covers things like #809FFE and PANTONE 18-2120.
Anyways, congrats Rikke and Brian!

_07/12/11_ Royce Entrance
In anticipation of using only my iPhone for daily photos for 3 weeks, I've been looking into panorama apps. I've always liked Pano for it's simplicity, but you can only do a single row panorama. I like Photosynth for it's amazing ability to capture a 360 degree panorama in just a minute or two, but it's low resolution. Today I bought AutoStitch, and I'm pretty happy with it.
Of course, I pushed it to the max right away, and it couldn't quite handle stitching together 40 photos of the entrance to Royce Hall. This is a subset of those photos, and I turned off blending, which is why it appears like a mosaic. I used Lightroom to convert to black and white. I think it looks cool and I'll definitely be experimenting more in the coming weeks.

_07/11/11_ Quartz
This is a pocket watch that I've had for a long time and has been without batteries for nearly as long. I set the watch in between two similarly-sized boxes and propped by softbox on top, pointing straight down. Every wonder why watches say "quartz" on them? Wonder no more.
In other news, I wrote a new blog post and uploaded a fresh batch of reject photos.

_07/10/11_ Stratified
This cool wrinkly rock is on it's way to becoming beach sand in a few thousand (?) years.The surrounding cliffs are also made up of crazy layers of rocks and sand, in various states of erosion. In the distance is Point Dume, which marks the northernmost point of the Santa Monica bay. I drove there this morning for the sunrise, which never came - too much marine layer.
I do like this shot, but it'd be so much better if I had an ND filter so I could use a longer shutter speed and really blur the water. I should really just buy one... anyone have a recommendation?
