Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Near our house is a convinience store with a huge brick wall. In the afternoon, you can get some cool shadows on it like this. I like that the shadow is more detailed on the left side of the photo, but the brick is more detailed on the right.

This is a close-up photo of some cool plants, shot with my 1-day-old iPhone 4S. I was going to post a 'Day One with the iPhone 4S' blog post, but I just didn't take enough photos today to justify that. Instead I'll do a 'First Weekend with the iPhone 4S' so stay tuned for that.
The camera is certainly better, but it's not like it blows away the iPhone 4 or anything. I'll do some comparisons later this week.

Check the metadata - I got an iPhone 4S! I've never gotten anything the same day it was released before... I didn't really consider myself one of those people, but hey, it worked out. Plus, since it was basically a big party at the AT&T store, I got free popcorn!
This is the first (and as of this writing, the only) photo I took with the new phone, and it's not great. The super-foggy conditions and boring intersection right outside the store didn't make for the most compelling subject. But never fear, I'll be snapping away tomorrow and will share all it with y'all.

As many of you are probably aware, iOS 5 was released yesterday. One of the most significant features is that you can now activate a new iPhone or iPad without ever connecting it to a computer, and your most crucial stuff will still be backed up via iCloud. This means you can use a portable device like this without owning a "real" computer, and for people that don't like technology, that's awesome. Even for people that would never get rid of a "real" computer, it still allows a lot more freedom. Believe me, it's a significant event in the history of personal computing.
Another neat feature is the ability to get to the camera on your iPhone from the lock screen, and to be able to use the volume-up button as a shutter release. This is the first photo I took using that button, but it certainly won't be the last. I'm not sure I'll ever use the button on the screen again...

Gotta love the random things you find at a loading dock. Today it was a pile of giant actuator-type things right next to some old HVAC controls. Our building did recently get a lot of upgrades, so I guess this is the old stuff that got replaced. Not much else to say about it - happy iOS 5 day!

I titled this photo 'ghostly lights' before I looked at last years' photo. Really.
I took the photo on an evening walk with my wife to get some frozen yogurt. I hadn't taken any photos, so I pointed my camera at all sorts of interestingly lit subjects and took long exposures. Most were throwaways. This was the most interesting to me.

This barcode-like, seizure-inducing excuse for carpet is what I get to look at every day. If you 'unfocus' your eyes, you can see an image of the Bruin bear*. I didn't want to take a photo of the carpet by itself though, so I threw this orange traffic cone into the mix. Why is there a traffic cone in our office? There are many random questions like that around the office which I do not know the answers to, but what I do know is that this carpet is off the hizzle.
Please also check out more Las Vegas photos. It's just a handful, so don't get too excited.

Anyone have Fruit Ninja on their iPhone/iPod/iPad? It's great fun, definitely worth the $1.
This photo is not in honor of that clever app, however. Instead, it's in honor of me riding my bike to the farmers market, buying too much food, and trying to get it all home safely. It actually wasn't a big deal at all, but I did get a few looks when I was trying to pack it all up.
I sure do like being able to eat my daily photos.

I got a couple new toys today, including a split ND filter that I used for this shot. I'm still trying to figure out the best ways of using it - a shot similar to this without the filter wasn't dramatically different. I like the subtle streaks in the sky (thanks to clouds that are far beyond the horizon) and the fact that Santa Cruz island is visible in the center of the photo. Here's a setup photo.
To get this vantage point, I had to climb over lots of rocks and get kind of creative. Point Dume is in Malibu and marks the northernmost point of the Santa Monica Bay. There are tide pools, rock climbing, hiking and hidden beaches - it's a pretty cool place.
