Welcome to the One/Day Project
Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.
Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Chicago Trip, Day 2
I'm a sucker for symmetry. This is, of course, a scene from the sculpture named Cloud Gate. It's also called the Bean, because it resembles... you guessed it.
The bulk of our day was spent at the nearby Art Institute of Chicago, where we saw American Gothic, Venus de Milo With Drawers, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait and that one from Ferris Bueller with the people and the dots.

Chicago Trip, Day 2
I'm a sucker for symmetry. This is, of course, a scene from the sculpture named Cloud Gate. It's also called the Bean, because it resembles... you guessed it.
The bulk of our day was spent at the nearby Art Institute of Chicago, where we saw American Gothic, Venus de Milo With Drawers, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait and that one from Ferris Bueller with the people and the dots.

Chicago Trip, Day 1
Glowing green at the top, where it touches the clouds, the Hancock building towers over most of Chicago. We had dinner here, 95 stories up from where I took this photo. The food was fantastic, but the view was mesmerizing and inspiring. At least when the clouds cleared.
I did take a couple of city photos from the top, but they were super grainy. When I get back to CA, I'll share a few photos from the Field museum and Shedd aquarium, which were both packed beyond belief. I guess everyone has Cesar Chavez day off.

Chicago Trip, Day 1

Chicago Trip, Day 0
I'm currently en route to our hotel in Chicago. I'll be posting iPhone dailies while we're here, so I don't have to catch up when we go home. Rest assured, I'll take lots of big boy camera photos too.
The flight didn't offer very good views, but I managed to grab this shot around sunset. I like how the ice forms a little circle near the hole at the bottom. Anyone know why there's a hole there? I'd imagine it has something to do with... pressure... hmm...

Another vast corridor, but this time it's a hallway instead of a bathroom. I tried to frame it so the stairway on the right was just a little bit visible, like a mystery staircase! Oooooh...
In other news, I'll be doing iPhone dailies for the next 5 or 6 days.

This is a photo of repeating elements, it just happens to be in a bathroom.
Have you ever seen one laid out like this? It's kind of extreme. If this were a movie, someone would get murdered in here, I'm pretty sure. I love the lone child-height urinal, randomly in the middle.

This is one of several blood oranges I got from a friend at work! I wish I had my own fruit tree so I could give back, but it's hard to grow anything in our 3x8' concrete patio. Go figure. One day we'll live in a real house with a real yard. One day...
Anyways, I set the orange on a cutting board with black foam board behind it, and set up my softbox on the off-camera flash. Since I got pretty close to the subject, I had to use a pretty small aperture to get it all in focus.

Man, I am sore after yesterday's food-packing, box-loading extravaganza. Coffee helped a bit. It also helped warm me up - it's been very cold and rainy all day. There was even some thunder! (A very rare occurrence in Los Angeles).
This beautiful cappuccino and hazelnut pastry were purchased and consumed at Intelligentsia. With all the rain, it just felt right to be a coffee snob.

This morning my wife and I volunteered at LARF. A terrible acronym, it stands for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. I guess LARFB would be even worse?
Anyways, it was a fun time and we packed tons of food - quite literally. Being a large man, I was one of the lucky people who got to stack the 30-pound boxes on pallets. We waited for the boxes to come down the line as other people with more cushy jobs put some food in, weighed them to make sure they had the right amount, and then stacked them - 30 to a pallet. It's nice to know we helped.
In a fun coincidence, we learned that my parents were doing the same thing at the same time in Tucson. Go team!

This is kind of a desperation shot - it's some curtains at work, flipped upside down. I played with the white balance to bring out some of the subtle hues, which seemed to be the way the light off of nearby buildings filtered in. I wish I had been able to take this in RAW, I would have had more to work with. Such is the difficult life of a cell phone photographer.
