Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Death Valley, Day 1
Today we drove to Death Valley for our 3rd Anniversary trip. This is a view from Father Crowley Point on highway 190, just before you start the dramatic descent into Panamint Valley - one valley west of Death Valley. The drive wasn't bad, and we were able to get to Texas Springs campground around 2pm. If it had been much later, we wouldn't have gotten a campsite there.

Note to discerning viewers - these next few Death Valley daily photos are NOT iPhone photos like I said they'd be. There was absolutely no data service in the area, so I just waited until I got home to upload daily photos taken with my D80. Sorry for the delay in service :)

Route 190
The dramatic look of the barren desert was clear as soon as we dropped into Panamint Valley, one valley to the west of Death Valley. This particular hill was next to a pull-off on the road and during our short time there, about half the cars pulled off for a quick photo.

Texas Spring Campground
I suppose this is a mesquite tree, but it seems a little different than the mesquite trees I know from the Sonoran desert. I like how much the red branch stands out.

We stayed at Texas Spring Campground, which is a first-come first-served area near Furnace Creek. The campsites were surrounded by this soft, yellow dirt with some really neat erosion evidence.

Death Valley, Day 2
Happy Thanksgiving! We had a lovely dinner at the posh Furnace Creek Inn in Death Valley.
Earlier in the day, we got up for the sunrise at Zabriskie Point, which was full of photographers. This isn't the typical view, but I felt like pointing my camera in a different direction than everyone else - I'm glad for it, as the clouds weren't nearly as neat in the other direction. Zabriskie Point is famous for the way it glows at sunrise, as well as being an awesome view of the colorful badlands in general.

This is the more typical view of Zabriskie Point. The promotory is called Manly Beacon. It's named for a guy whose last name was Manly, not because of its masculine features.
I took this photo a minute or two after the 'peak colorfulness' that occurs during sunrise.

Another detail view of the badlands. It really is remarkable how there are simply no plants at all in this area.

We learned about the desert holly, one of the few plants adapted to survive the extreme heat of Death Valley. Its leaves turn away from the sun during the day, and it only flowers in winter - it's polinated by the wind, since there are almost no insects around.

Dante's View is a vista that overlooks Death Valley and specifically the salt flats at Badwater. This is looking away from Death Valley, to the East, but I like how the light was hitting the side of the hill.

The tiny black figures on the salt flats are, of course, people. Badwater Road is the dark curve on the bottom left. Two days later we would walk out on it ourselves.

From high above at Dante's View, you get to see some intersting colors and shapes that are hardly visible from the valley floor.
