3 remarkably cold days in New Orleans. Took a plantation tour, did a lot of walking around the Central Business District and French Quarter, ate lots of Southern cooking and only did a modest amount of drinking. I swear!

Sunrise Colors
New Orleans
The colors are exaggerated a bit, but this was the scene on some skyscrapers from our hotel roof at sunrise.

Sunrise from our hotel roof - go back three pics to see sunset.

There were a ton of cool painted signs on buildings all over New Orleans.
Golden
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1
This wasn't the only tomb where someone had left rings like these.
The entire Northeast wall of the cemetery is like this - hundreds of crypts.
Rows of Tombs
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1
Typically, there's one tomb per family, with 2 or 3 coffins stacked on top of each other.
Mother
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1
There was heavy damage to many of the tombs, such as this. A local non-profit called Save Our Cemeteries works to, well, save them.
Slab
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1
A marble slab, waiting to... go somewhere?
Red
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1
The was the only red tomb I saw in either of the cemeteries I visited. You can see that there used to be a marble slab in front of the brick. The slab would have listed the names of the deceased. When a new person died, they'd take off the slab and break down the brick so they could put the new coffin in, then rebuild the brick wall and put the slab back.
If room was needed, the bones of the oldest body would be left under the vault, and their coffin would be removed.
