jawsnap  > Travel > Orange City | Apr 11
Along with my wife and mom-in-law, I visited Orange City, Iowa in late April for my grandmother-in-law's 100th birthday. The small town (pop. 6k) is a Dutch enclave with windmills, wooden shoes and over half a dozen reformed churches. Most of these photos are from a single day that we spent driving around. A few at the end are from Omaha, where we flew into and out of.

Wooden Shoes
Old Factory Coffee Shop
This coffee shop has only been a coffee shop for a few years. It used to be a shoe factory, where the owner would carve wooden shoes with old equipment from Holland. The city now owns the equipment and they do demonstrations, and the coffee shop has left it up as kind of an exhibit.
Row of Shoes
Old Factory Coffee Shop
These particular wooden shoes were made in Holland, but they used to be made by the guy who ran the Old Factory. My wife and her mom both have a pair that were made here.
Melitta
Old Factory Coffee Shop
Aside from being an old Dutch shoe factory, the coffee shop was really cool and pretty fancy! Unlike the typical LA Starbucks, no one was in a rush here - they hand make every cup using this cone filter, it was kind of fun to watch.
Bomb Shelter
Veterans Memorial Park
While driving around, we stopped at a cool old building that used to be a bomb shelter for about 90 people. It's all boarded up now.
Tulip Bed
Although none were blooming yet, there were tulip beds all over town. The annual tulip festival is a huge deal here, people come from all over. It's always the 3rd weekend of May.
Tree Reflection
Windmill Park
Near the center of town (the 'centrum' they call it) there's a park with all sorts of miniature windmill replicas lining a canal. This would be the canal...
Windmill
Windmill Park
Out of the dozen or so windmills I saw in Orange City, this was the only one I ever saw move.
Stairs
Across from Windmill park there is a... tower... that you can climb up and look out over the town... from about 15 feet up. It's pretty random.
Highest Price
Some Cute Little Gift Shop
This awesome intricately detailed antique cash register isn't used to ring customers up, but it still holds their money and works like a charm. The highest dollar amount it can handle is shown here.
