General Grant
Widest tree in the world (40 ft diameter), 3rd largest by volume (1320 cu. meters). It's located in Grant Grove, which is part of King's Canyon NP. We got here really early and almost had the place to ourselves - it's almost magical being among such enormous living things.
Sequoias in Grant Grove
Fallen Monarch
You can actually walk through this log - it's pretty neat. Old trees in the final stage of development are actually called "monarchs."
Squirrel
I see SOOOO many squirrels at UCLA where I work, so it's always exciting to see a different species. This one is cuter, too.
Sequoia Detail
One of the things I like about the sequoias is how gnarly the bases are. This photo was taken in Grant Grove.
Fire Lookout
Marmot
We pulled off the road to take some photos of the view, and this guy poked his head out. Marmots have to be one of the cutest animals.
More marmot action...
Tokopah Falls
My wife and I at Tokopah Falls in Sequoia National Park. After visiting Grant Grove in the early morning, we started off on this pretty easy and well worth it hike. Viewed from a distance, you can see how the falls cascades down the back of the glacial valley. Very impressive.
