Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

_12/31/11_ Sparkler
Happy New Year!
New Year's Eve has been relaxing - a nice, lazy day with my wife. I've never really photographed sparklers before, so this isn't the most inspired photo. Also, I'm pretty sure they're illegal. At least I'm not going around setting cars on fire - apparently there's been a very busy arsonist in Hollywood over the past few nights.

_12/30/11_ Yellow Balloon
This lovely yellow balloon was floating around as we left Tucson this morning to make the lovely drive back to Los Angeles. I took this photo at Dunkin' Donuts while my wife went inside to buy fuel for the trip. Directly under the balloon is Mount Lemmon (9157ft / 2791m), the highest point in the Santa Catalina mountains. I did a bit of editing with the color and such.

[last year] so cold...
_12/21/11_ Illuminated X
Done! Today was my last day of work for 2011 and tomorrow we're off to Tucson for about a week. I'm incredibly happy about that.
This is a light in the front walkway of Royce Hall. I stuck around after work to take photos in the nice, quiet, peaceful, student-less evening.

_12/20/11_ Plant Shadows
Another desperation shot that I took on my way out of work. The shadows are from larger plants next to the one you see here. Anyone know what type this is? They have a lot of them around UCLA, but I no longer work near the botanical gardens so it's hard to check.

[last year] timeless...
_12/19/11_ Leafed
Like yesterday, today's photo is something covered in something. In this case, leaves. It's a quick desperation shot as I left work tonight.

[last year] beautiful red rocks...
_12/18/11_ Barnacled
Thanks to the low tide, I was able to get somewhat close to the barnacle-covered supports underneath the Santa Monica Pier tonight. I liked this photo best, mostly because of the depth of the composition. There were about 5 other photographers there around sunset but most were shooting fellow human beings, not the pier itself. It was a nice sunset - the others probably got some nice shots.
Afterwards, my wife and I grabbed some Mexican food where apparently the bartender was just learning how to make a margarita. In a good way, though - it was like half tequila.

_12/17/11_ Snowman Spirit
Another Christmas-y desperation photo today. This little snowman has some red and blue lights inside that blink. It's fascinating.
To get the shot, I used my S95 and my SB800 that I had set up from the previous 2 days. I fired the flash manually with one hand while manipulating the camera with the other. It took quite a few tries to get what I was going for.

_12/16/11_ Shiny Sparkly
This is one of many similarly bright-colored tiny ornaments for our tiny Christmas tree that we bought this year. Only three more [work] days until I'm done at for 2011...

_12/15/11_ Crown of Characters
I liberated this fantastic piece of metal from a typewriter slated for the trash bin. I set in on a hard drive platter that I still had lying around from Tuesday's photo. I like how the characters actually appear correctly in the reflection - right side up and not flipped. I also like how unmistakably metallic it is.
The hardest part about creating this photo was the prep work. I spent a good 15 minutes bent over the sink with a toothbrush to scrub all of the ink out of the numerous and tiny crevices.

Update for RuSu - Indeed! It came from an IBM Correcting Selectric II. What a great name.
2nd update - Apparently it's called a typewheel.
