Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

_12/01/12_ Mini Tree
Happy December! Do you like our mini tree? We put it up today, along with some other Christmas decorations. We're always at our parents for the holidays, so we only have a handful of decorations at this point in our lives.
This photo took a tremendous amount of work, but it was fun. I'll post something about the setup soon.

As of this photo, I've re-joined SmugMug's DailyPhotos community. The whole community concept on SmugMug could really use an overhaul, and I'm still not happy about losing control of my look and feel just because I'm part of the community. I hope they implement some changes soon (I should get on the forums and see what's going on).
Regardless of the annoyances, I miss the part of the community that does work - passionate photographers following other passionate photographers on a daily basis. So that's why I'm back. I've never been very good at keeping up with some of you, but at least I'm tagging along.

Happy Earth Day!
We went on a short hike this morning and saw nature in action - some California newts doing some reproducing. Although I think there are 7 newts in this photo, only two of them are actually mating and the rest are other males that want in on the action. At least that's what I read online.
We actually saw two of these scenes! Spring is in the air I guess.
This photo turned out OK, but most of the ones I took were throwaways because of reflection and distortion issues from shooting through the surface of the water.

_12/25/11_ Sleigh Bouquet
This lovely bouquet belongs to my wife's grandmother, and I decided it would make a cool photo. I used a 1/3s shutter speed and an off-camera flash. After the flash fired, I held the lens steady(ish) and rotated the camera body, which zoomed in and created the light trails from the Christmas tree lights.
I'm happy I spend the time to take this photo, as I thought it was going to end up being another desperation shot. We had 14 people over for dinner today, which went wonderfully! Also, we have way too much food left over. Let me know if you want some pie. I won't send any to you, I'm just curious.

In arbitrary number news, today is my 300th photo of Year 4! Only 66 more to go. Yes, 66.

_12/17/11_ Snowman Spirit
Another Christmas-y desperation photo today. This little snowman has some red and blue lights inside that blink. It's fascinating.
To get the shot, I used my S95 and my SB800 that I had set up from the previous 2 days. I fired the flash manually with one hand while manipulating the camera with the other. It took quite a few tries to get what I was going for.

This is one of many similarly bright-colored tiny ornaments for our tiny Christmas tree that we bought this year. Only three more [work] days until I'm done at for 2011...

_12/15/11_ Crown of Characters
I liberated this fantastic piece of metal from a typewriter slated for the trash bin. I set in on a hard drive platter that I still had lying around from Tuesday's photo. I like how the characters actually appear correctly in the reflection - right side up and not flipped. I also like how unmistakably metallic it is.
The hardest part about creating this photo was the prep work. I spent a good 15 minutes bent over the sink with a toothbrush to scrub all of the ink out of the numerous and tiny crevices.

Update for RuSu - Indeed! It came from an IBM Correcting Selectric II. What a great name.
2nd update - Apparently it's called a typewheel.

Ring a ling... hear them sing...
I'm tired. I just spent 4 days in San Francisco for a conference and 5 days camping in Death Valley before that, with only a 1-day break in between. It's been fun, but yeah... I'm tired.
This is the only photo I took today - a sculpture on the side of the Santa Monica Place mall, where we ended up getting lunch today. It's actually been a photo of the day once before. I I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself with my daily photos, but I think this composition is different enough that it's OK.

In unrelated photo news, I just uploaded 25 new reject photos to Flickr. They're all free for anyone to use as they see fit, provided it's not for commercial use and you give me credit.

I'm wondering if these were soccer balls before the World Cup?
Passing By
Soweto
Across from the Buy & Braai, these two gentlemen walked by each other as a massive ABSA balloon looms in the distance. ABSA is a local bank, and the giant balloon was part of a mall and you can ride in it.
