Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

This cutie is Benjamin! We tried to coax a smile out of him, but he was pretty tired. It was understandable, because he and his family just flew into California from the East Coast earlier in the morning. We had fun meeting them for dinner at Ruby's at the end of the Huntington Beach pier, which you can see in the distance.
Also, Happy Earth Day! I was excited to see some dolphins from the pier, and earlier in the day at work I saw a raccoon up in a tree outside my office window. YAY TEH NATURE.

2013-04-21 CicLAvia Terminus
This is a panorama of Venice Beach at Windward Avenue (where the "VENICE" sign is), which was packed with bicyclists that participated in CicLAvia, including myself - that's my bike on the left. CicLAvia is Los Angeles' version of events that apparently have become common throughout South/Central America where major city streets are closed off for the exclusive use of pedestrians and bicyclists. It's happened a few times, but before today it was only around downtown, which is a bit far without driving, and that would sort of defeat the purpose. Today's route included Venice Boulevard all the way to the ocean, so I jumped on for a few miles.
It was a lot of fun! I plan on doing it next time for sure.

2013-04-06 Hermosa Beach Pier
Happy birthday to my wonderful wife! I took her out to breakfast at the Good Stuff next to the Hermosa Beach Pier, of which I took this photo from underneath. It was a beautiful day, and after hanging out at the beach we saw a performance of the hilarious Avenue Q.
I like this photo because of the crazy patterns on the weather-worn concrete.

Tonight I went for a walk/run through the sand around sunset. It was fun, and quite a workout. The ocean was pretty rough and there was a lot of seaweed washed up on on the beach. This bit in particular caught my eye as it made a long curve in the wet sand.

__02/28/13__ Four Stones
And thus completes Year 5. Tomorrow I shall begin on Year 6 of the One/Day Project, so update your bookmarks if you want up-to-date photos.
As per tradition, the final photo of Year 5 was taken at the beach at sunset. My wife picked me up from work and we braved through some exceptionally bad traffic to PCH. We parked in the first lot we could turn into, since sunset was rapidly approaching. We trudged through the sand and found plenty of stones spread across the beach, these four nicely-spaced ones caught my eye and I got a few shots off before the sun completely disappeared. I like this one mostly because of the sheen off the wet sand.

__02/10/13__ Sandpipers in Sync
There were hundreds upon hundreds of sandpipers at the beach today, and I got this in-motion photo of a small fraction of them as they ran away from an incoming wave. The group behavior was mesmerizing.

__01/31/13__ Greetings from CA
I had jury duty today and was excused in the afternoon (yay). I took my bike so I could ride home, and I'm happy I did - it was a beautiful day and I got to ride along the beach for much of the ride.
At one point, there were four lifeguard towers all next to each other for whatever reason. They struck me as a group of friends watching the sunset.

I went for a weird perspective in this shot. I took it from up on top of the bluffs in Santa Monica, and framed it so that only a small strip of the beach was in view. I didn't realize how well the pavement on the bluffs would blend in with the sand.

_09/01/12_ Bonding
This father/son pair looked like they had fun watching the giant waves roll in. This is about as far out as most people got - there is a high surf advisory this weekend and the water was pretty crazy.
