Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

Self Portrait 2
We had a lot of fun playing around the sculpture, as did everyone. There was a pretty big crowd.
Curvy Reflections
Another shot of Cloud Gate.
Self Portrait 1
Directly underneath, in the center of Cloud Gate, there's a spot where it becomes a non-distorted mirror. Can you see me and my wife, pointing the camera up?
Distortion
A shot of Cloud Gate, the bean-shaped sculpture in Millenium Park. Every city should have a giant mirror sculpture like this, it's so fun.
_04/07/11_ Treebute
So, a few days ago the giant coral tree near my work had a large branch break and it fell onto an area where people walk. Since it was a safety hazard, they taped it off and said there would be an emergency tree trimming to take care of the problem. Guess what - they cut most of it down!!! Coral trees are awesome in general (see my 9/20/10 photo) but this one was particularly cool because of its enormous size. Well I suppose it won't be a problem anymore... Ugh.
Anyways, this photo is of the center of the stump that remains from the section they 'trimmed.' I gathered some of the bright red beans/seeds that come from the tree and sprinkled them around as some sort of tribute. I kind of wish the focus was on the bean in the middle, not the one in the hole, but it was tough to get it right with my compact. I like the shallow depth of field though. These beans are so vibrant, I want to do more with them...

Also, thanks for all the comments on yesterday's shot! My wife liked all the extra bday wishes :)

And in other news, I started a tumblr site - jawsnap.tumblr.com. I plan on using it to post photos I really like. It's a good way to share stuff, and it'll be nice to refer to for inspiration.

_09/13/10_ Dainty Coffee
After the lighting workshop at the aquarium last night, I was inspired to recreate some of it on my own - most of the setups involved foam presentation boards. I feel lied to, though. The instructor said he got all his 'throw away' materials for $25 at Walmart, including 3 presentation boards - I just got back from a trip to Staples and they were $14 each! Instead I bought some 'illustration board' which is just extra-thick poster board. It works, but it's not nearly as reflective as the foam presentation boards.
Such is life.
Anyways, I took a photo of the setup. Check it out.

_08/22/10_ Caffeine
The chemical formula for caffeine, spelled out in coffee beans. After I uploaded, I checked iStockphoto to see if someone else had already done this and indeed they had, although it looks like they used ground coffee for it. I prefer my version, and will submit it shortly :)
Placing the coffee beans involved some excellent toothpick control and took about 20 minutes. The beans are on a white reflective surface (our tv stand) and it was lit with an off camera flash placed just out of frame at the top. I used a step stool to position myself directly over the beans, and I had to use a magazine to shield the lens so the light from the flash wasn't going directly into it.
