Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

2013-04-14 High Contrast Dinner
I only took one photo today - my dinner! The bread has ricotta cheese spread over it, and the noodles are dyed with squid ink, so it's very black vs white. The pasta actually put off an ocean-y smell when they were cooking. Didn't taste like it, thankfully.

Thanks for the comments on yesterday's photo - I do indeed wonder where they're all going, and I never even thought about the fact that it can be a good time capsule with the car models.

2013-04-03 Rich
A diamond with the word 'RICH' on it, eh? It's a fire hydrant that I noticed as I was waiting to cross the street. Not sure who/what Rich is, or why the word isn't centered in the diamond. Or square. I just... I just don't know.

_04/17/12_ Free Flow
This piece is a commentary on extremism and our polarized society. There seems to be such little area for compromise, and there's so much fighting back and forth in what appears to be an endless cycle.
Nah, I'm just kidding, it's the end of a pipe snake that we use to clean festering hair clumps from the drain. But still...

While you're here, why not look at some Chicago photos?

_03/10/12_ Just a Leek
This huge leek was purchased earlier at the farmers market. I've always liked the way leeks have the gradient from green to yellow to white, along with the subtle lines that follow the stalk. I also like how if it was the same shape but made of wood and leather strips with metal, it'd make a wonderful medieval weapon. A flail, I do believe.
To see how I photographed it, take a look at this blog post I wrote up just for you.

_03/08/12_ Black Daisies
It was kind of a hectic day today, and I didn't find any time to get outside for a photo. Instead, I took five photos of some daisies that we have and smooshed them together into this Photoshop creation. There was layering, there was masking, there was inverting, there were effects, but in the end I'm not really sure what I did. Just played around, mostly.

In other news, I was featured on the campus staff and faculty news! Check me out!

_04/25/11_ Black & Wine
This is a carrot, an edible root that is typically bright orange in color. Wait no, that can't be right...
Hold on...
OK, it turns out this is a wine glass. Sorry about that. I don't know what I was thinking.

_04/14/11_ Rising Into Black
Tonight I went to see Mike Theiss speak at the Annenberg. He's a storm chaser and he showed some amazing photos and video of hurricanes and tornadoes. Check out his website - www.extremenature.com. It was a really interesting talk and I'm glad there are people like him doing that. I don't think I'll ever be one of them, but I can fantasize.
This is one of the towers outside the Annenberg... not the most inspired shot, but I like the black and white treatment with the fading vertical lines. There were certainly no 150mph winds, but it was pretty gusty so I'm glad I got a sharp shot.

__01/29/11__ Walking in Black
These two women were photographed while walking down an alley in Santa Monica. My position was on level 8 of a parking garage. We had just watched True Grit. I liked it.
You may have noticed that this photo is a bit gritty. Truly, it's because of the ISO noise.

Black Sand and Palm Trees
Punalu'u Beach, Hawaii
The black sand in this photo was dry, so it's a bit more gray. We learned later that the sand in black sand beaches is a direct deposit of lava that flowed into the ocean and shattered upon hitting the water. Once the lava flow in that area stops, the black sand starts to erode away - within a couple decades or so.
