Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

2012-03-06 Egg on Slate
I first tried to take a photo of a plant silhouette. Then I put it on some stairs. Then I took away the plant. Then I added back some eggs. You know, cause... why not?
I didn't like the eggs on the stairs, so I brought them inside onto this particularly rippled piece of slate tile. Lit from behind with a reflector in front so the egg wasn't a complete silhouette.

2012-03-05 Coral Tree Reach
I love these trees. This particular one is near the dance buildings at UCLA, but I really love them along San Vicente Blvd. I took this shot when the sun was illuminating only the top of the tree, which has tons of red flowers right now. Despite the interesting lighting and nice colors, I thought it was better as a B&W, since it's more about the shape of the branches.

2012-03-03 The Knifemaker
This is Laurence, owner of Westside Sharpening & Cutlery Center in Santa Monica, showing off some of the unfinished blades that will become his custom Rhino knives. I took photos of him this afternoon as my final assignment for the Environmental Portrait class I've been taking the past few months. I've always enjoyed knives, so it was a lot of fun to see him work. Like photography, knife-making is a blend of the technical and artistic.
If you're in the area, you should bring your knives to him to sharpen. He knows his stuff.

[last year] I do like how this one turned out...
__02/28/12__ Expansion
Today would be the end of Year 4 of my One/Day Project, except that it's leap year, so it will end tomorrow. That was the point from the beginning, though - leap day to leap day. Can you believe it? Four years. I do have something planned, but it might get rained out... stay tuned.
Today's photo was supposed to be a honey bee on a cherry blossom. It was my first daily photo ever, and I paid tribute to that by taking a similar bee-on-flower photo on 2/27/09, 2/26/10 and 2/24/11. This year was a bust - there were no bees! Very sad.
But I walked around the botanical gardens anyways, and I got this photo of a cycad frond. I actually took a photo of the same plant last year, but I like this one better.

[last year] one of my best, for sure...
__02/27/12__ Pillar of Salt
This is a detail shot of a sculpture depicting Lot's Wife, from the Biblical book of Genesis. Lot was told by some angels to get the heck out of Sodom, because God was about to destroy it. He left with only his wife and daughters, but his wife looked back after explicitly being told not to, and BAM! She's a pillar of salt. Read it for yourself - Genesis 19:26.
I'm fairly certain this sculpture is made of concrete and not salt. I should have licked it to confirm.

__02/21/12__ Embrace
Aww, love. This man-and-woman statue was made by a fellow named Chazi in Pemba, Mozambique. I took photos of pretty much every other souvenir we bought from our Africa Trip, but this one slipped through the cracks.

__02/20/12__ Sandstone Column
Desperation shot tonight - some sandstone coasters. I stacked them so there would be a continuous-looking line throughout all four.

__02/15/12__ Stephanie
This is Stephanie, who is one half of the sculpture titled Stephanie and Shy. The other half a horse, which I'm assuming is the one named Shy. Neither are wearing clothes. The sculpture was created by Robert Graham in 1980-81.
I do realize this would be a highly inappropriate photo if it were of a real person. I thought the reflection was cool, though, made possible by today's rain.

By the way, are you on Twitter? I am, and I tweet occasionally. Follow me: @jawsnap.

__02/08/12__ Frizz
A feather from our couch. Not the most put-together feather I've seen. One of those days, I guess.
