Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

_04/08/12_ Overhead Lamp
Happy Easter! This photo has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's a lamp on the side of Santa Monica Seafood that happened to be over my head as I walked by.
Hope you had a great weekend.

__02/26/12__ Ascent
This is a scene from the Los Angeles Zoo. Not the one that currently houses animals, but the old one that was open from 1912 through 1965. According to the sign, this and the other structures were built by the WPA in the 1930s. They're pretty pitiful by today's standards - lots of metal bars and concrete. Many of the cages seem shockingly small, but then again, I have no idea what animals were living in any particular enclosure. In general, though, they're definitely smaller than any zoo I've been to. It's a fascinating place to explore, and makes you really appreciate modern facilities.
This particular photo was taken in one of the larger exhibits, which I assume held big cats or bears. These stairs led up from the public view, up to where the animals presumably slept at night and got fed.

__02/24/12__ Gran Mano
Thanks to Russell, I've gotten to take photos of some pretty cool things from the library, such as these antique glass eyes and this first edition Origin of the Species. Today, I photographed him, as part of my Environmental Portraiture class. It was a lot of fun, and he pulled out other gems like a container for leeches, a super-old German manuscript with fantastic color drawings of injuries, and a book that went on the space shuttle.
This giant hand was an advertisement for Untisal, a company that isn't around anymore. The bottle says 'Contra-Dolor', which means 'against pain'. So basically, a pain reliever. Way cooler swag than, say, a Pfizer pen.

Selling Chickens
Here's a wider view of the chickens and goats for sale. One of the guys yelled something at us, but our friends weren't sure what it was. We didn't buy anything.
Cooped
In addition to goats, chickens were also available. They were held in these homemade bamboo cages.
_05/05/11_ Headache Potion No. 9
This is a recent ~110 year-old acquisition of the library where I work. We also got numbers 5, 6, 12, 16, 17, 23, 26, 31 and 40, but I chose to highlight #9 for reasons that should be obvious to anyone familiar with popular music of the mid-1960s. As always, my librarian friend Russell was most kind in letting me take photos of the stuff, and found me this fancy velvet cloth to set it on (drink coasters are underneath).
I used f/2.0 on my S95 to blur the book cages in the background, but I like that it's still obvious what they are. For lighting I only had the florescents in the room, so I took a lot of shots knowing that some would be blurry. As luck would have it, this is the first shot I took.

In other news - new blog post! It's about iPhone wallpaper, so check it out if y'all own one of 'em.

Not sure what got caged in here... something tasty, I'm sure.
_12/09/10_ Cage Reflection
Today I had a meeting in the 'penthouse' of a building - it was a strange small room in the middle of the roof, with lots of HVAC stuff all around it. I took a few shots during a break, including this one that I liked because of the various lines.

In other news, I got a new camera today!!! But since I just got it, I won't be posting any daily photos with it quite yet. Stay tuned for more details tomorrow...

_05/08/10_ Towering Cage
This imposing structure is a play tower at Clover Park, site of today's Santa Monica Festival which I attended briefly. It was fun - I hope to go again next year. I'd never been to the park before and I immediately noticed this cool tower. I just might have to go up it myself sometime...
