Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

_12/25/12_ Trio of Jesi
The title is assuming that Jesi is the plural of Jesus.
These vastly different baby Jesus figures are from nativity scenes that my parents have. They have quite a collection and I wanted to get a photo of ALL of the baby Jesi at once, but there was too much dynamic range and all of the light colored ones were overexposed. I didn't have the energy to try and figure out a way around it, so I just chose three.
I received some pretty great gifts this year, but above all: my wife is now out of the hospital. Can't beat that. Merry Christmas!

_10/19/12_ Lumpy Heads
Some very unflattering light on a little carving of two figures embracing. Same as this one.

_08/01/12_ Buddha
I'm sticking with my black background, minimalist lighting thing, apparently. Today's subject is a small Buddha figurine we got from a friend while she was in Thailand. In a good example of how small the world is, my parents were actually in Thailand at the same time. They got us something, too, and I also took a photo of it.

[last year] holy crap we went to Africa...
__02/21/12__ Embrace
Aww, love. This man-and-woman statue was made by a fellow named Chazi in Pemba, Mozambique. I took photos of pretty much every other souvenir we bought from our Africa Trip, but this one slipped through the cracks.

_09/19/11_ Beehive
We bought this carving container in Mozambique. I'm assuming it's supposed to be a beehive. The quality is amazing, though, and you can just barely tell where the top is separated from the bottom.
It's pretty much a desperation shot - I set my compact on our dresser and moved the carving towards the wall so it would cast a bit of a shadow. I set the camera to manual so I could blow out the highlights.

_08/29/11_ Wooden Hippo
OK, so I lied in yesterday's photo - here's one more Africa souvenir. I think it looks really cool, bu there's not a whole lot to say about it... here's a setup photo.
Also, go ahead and check out my first batch of Africa photos! I hope you enjoyed my iPhone daily photos, but these are the real deal. Part 1 includes everyone's favorite - the animals. Parts 2 and 3 will be along shortly.

Overpriced
R36 near J. G. Strijdom Tonnel
Definitely a touristy rip off, but they're still cool carvings and of course we bought a few. We saw all of the animals depicted here.
_08/28/11_ Elephant Light
This is perhaps my last Africa souvenir photo, mostly because the only ones I haven't photographed already are gifts for people and they need to remain surprises. It is, of course, an ostrich egg that has been skillfully carved into this neat elephant design. I actually had to break out our own Dremel tool to get the hole wide enough for a tea light - the egg shell dust smells like burning hair, it's pretty gross.
I put the egg on a black candle holder on a black background and used a 15 second shutter speed to capture the glow from the candle. For the top light, I used my SB800 with a softbox at 1/16 power and then modified the white balance to give it the blueish hue.

In related news, if you want to see some real elephants, check out my freshly uploaded gallery - Africa, Part 1. I'll be adding captions soon!
