Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

2013-05-06 Pool of Clouds
It rained today, and I found this puddle on a piece of wood that nicely reflected the clearing sky.

[last year] too much drama... but i'm back...
2013-04-04 Cloud Demon
I love what fun shapes come out of simple symmetry. My favorite I've done is this one from San Diego. Today's is clouds - they looked cool and I need a photo, but then flipped it around to make this mirror image version, after deciding it was the coolest arrangement.

[last year] if this is too scary, here's a cute baby...
2013-03-08 Shiny Building
Taken right around sunset after a "wacky" weather day as the LA Times put it. Mostly it rained, but it cleared up in time for sunset.

__02/15/13__ Light Pole
This light pole also made an appearance about a month ago, but there were no clouds that day. As you can see, there were some pretty cool clouds today. In Lightroom, I basically just lowered the saturation to zero and raised the clarity to 100, not much else.

Oh, and don't forget to check out my San Diego photos!

__02/03/13__ Lone Tree
This tree is perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. It's not really as serene as you might think, as it's in the middle of Palisades Park in Santa Monica, with lots of people and cars and buildings and roads and sand before you actually get to the ocean. I knelt down low to cut out everything but the flowers, tree and sky. Because I was forced to get close to the tree because of a fence, I used the iPhone's panorama function to get the wide shot. I wish I could have gotten a horizontal view, but the dynamic range with the setting sun was too much.

I'm expecting something fun tomorrow. Some major photography equipment that will bring some major changes for me. I'm very much looking forward to it. Stay tuned.

__01/27/13__ Observing LA
Today was the last day with my rented ultra-wide lens, and I headed up to Griffith Observatory to take advantage. It was kind of a disaster of a trip beginning with horrible traffic and ending with a locked gate at the exit. But despite that and everything in between, I got some good shots. This one shows the big center dome that houses the planetarium along with a glimpse of the amazing view that you get from this spot.

__01/06/13__ American Coaster
This is the roller coaster on the Santa Monica pier. I composed so you could only see the top part of the track and nothing else, and then I went nuts in Lightroom to make it more dramatic in a very Instagrammy sort of way. It's not the greatest photo for sure, but it's because my main focus was on this:

That's right, I'm working on time lapse stuff! I finally have all the equipment I need to do a decent job. My Nikon D7000 has an intervalometer built in, I have a battery grip so it can stay powered for hours, I have an excellent tripod that won't move, and I have a computer with QT7 and significant processing power and disk space. I'm hoping to piece together a nice little video of the pier with multiple time lapseses.

_12/29/12_ Clouds at Sunset
I took this shot at my parents house in Tucson, tomorrow we head home.
With my wife being in the hospital 5 days and my grandmother still sick, it hasn't been a very good vacation. But - we're incredibly thankful for such a loving and supportive family - it was wonderful to be around them, even if the circumstances could be better.

_12/27/12_ Palm and Clouds
The almost-full moon tonight lit up the partly cloudy sky in a cool way. This is a 30-second exposure with a palm tree in my mom-in-law's backyard for some context.
I've now had a whopping three photos in a row with my D7000. But I'm positive I'll be back to the iPhone tomorrow. Any guesses as to why???
