Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

The old building at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. The new building surrounds it, so they have to be very careful while they tear this one down. It's incredible to watch, and I actually took some video of this massive claw thing that I will post as soon as I cut it together (might be a while). Basically this thing munches away at the building, a little bit at a time. Every once in a while a large amount of debris will crash to the ground. It's crazy, I've never seen anything like it.
I took a photo of it 5 days ago, and that part of the building is now gone. They're moving pretty quickly...

__02/19/12__ Natural Habitat
Today we went whale watching in Long Beach. We saw none. NONE! We did see a lot of dolphins, however, and this trio of sea lions basking on a buoy. Back on shore, the announcer kept telling the next group that they might "see California sea lions in their natural habitat!". Not exactly.
I was pretty unimpressed with the crew's way of dealing with no sightings - they just played it off like it was a wonderful trip because "we saw a lot of dolphins, which are actually a type of whale!" The hell with that - I didn't pay $60 to see common dolphins. At the very least, a discount on a future trip would have been nice.
It was fun, though, and we had a nice relaxing lunch afterwards. And then we went to IKEA, for no reason at all. We'd never been before, and it was crazy!!! We have not planned a return trip at this time...

__01/18/12__ Long Climb
At first I wanted to post a super dark photo as a blackout protest against SOPA and PIPA, but chose a real photo instead. This is part of a construction crane, specifically the part where it transitions from sun to shade. I processed the photo quite a bit, but I like the look. It's crazy to think that a crane operator starts their day by climbing straight up this thing.
What if you forget something? Or have to pee?

_06/11/11_ Watch Out for Waves
This was taken at Huntington Beach, where we met some friends for a lovely bonfire on the beach. Around sunset I excused myself to go walk down to the water with my rented Nikkor 300mm f/4. I'm planning on going to the zoo with it tomorrow, to really put it through its paces. I'm pretty impressed with this lens so far, although it might be too heavy for travel so I'm going to rent the 70-300mm to compare.
In this shot, the Huntington Beach Pier is over a mile away. See the shipping cranes in the distance? I didn't notice them at all when I took the photo; they're over 10 miles away.

_04/18/11_ Hanging On
I swore this thing was dead.
I mean, what kind of stupid crane fly just hangs onto some leaves with only its front two legs? I thought maybe it died during the night and just hadn't fallen off yet. I got super close to it and took 7 photos before it proved me wrong and flew away.

_07/20/10_ iBeams
Recent construction along the 405, shot with my iPhone. Get it? iBeams instead of I-beams? Like it's an Apple product? Hilarious, I know!
I probably could have gotten a better composition, but I didn't stick around long because there were signs saying the sidewalk was closed. Of course, at 5pm no one was working, so the chances of getting crushed by a crane or giant steel bar were pretty slim.

West Coast Trip Day 8
Spent a wonderful day in Seattle, spent mostly at Pike Street Market. We also took a 1 hour harbor cruise where I got this shot of a cargo ship being loaded. The sun had come out and kept peeking from behind the giant rows of containers. I got a lot of great shots today, and this is the best one via iPhone.

Sunrise over building in Westwood along Wilshire Blvd. Not sure what it's going to be, but I'm guessing luxury apartments like many of the other high rises along this stretch of Wilshire. I think the unfinished building looks neat, and the flag was blowing in the perfect direction.
