Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

2013-05-09 Pink Sky
I was pulled out of my house this evening by a glowing orange sky that then turned more of a pink color. Everything had this great warm glow, and although it's a little bit exaggerated in this photo, I hope I captured the feeling of it. Magic hour, indeed.

__01/17/13__ Three Lightpoles
Desperation shot in a parking lot as I rode my bike home. Last work day for a week! Will be in SD for a few days next week, should be fun.

Dusk Colors
Turning away from the sunset, you see a pretty blue to pink sky before it faded away.
_11/24/12_ Fence and Tree
Taken at a marsh/meadow on the North side of Big Bear Lake. We saw a couple of hawks that looked like they were having a field day. Hah.

[last year] beautiful sunrise...
_11/23/12_ Dusk at the Lake
My wife at Big Bear Lake after sunset. It was really nice to be there and see the beauty of the place. It had been a long time since either of us had been to the mountains.

[last year] welcome to death...
_10/06/12_ Santa Monica Pier
I never mind coming back here for more photos. Today was a gorgeous sunset, followed by some bright pink dusk clouds. As another photographer on the scene said - awe-inspiring.
My plan was to use my graduated ND filter, but I didn't need it - this is just my bare lens and various adjustments in Lightroom. I spent a lot of time cleaning up dust spots, thanks to a horribly dirty sensor. I really need to get it cleaned this week.

_09/22/12_ Dusk in Torrance
After the spectacle of seeing space shuttle Endeavour fly over, we headed to Torrance for a little stay-cation in the Miyako Hybrid Hotel, which was a lot of fun. The 'hybrid' part refers to the fact that everything is Japanese-American. It's a taste of Japan for white folks like us, and it's a comfort zone for visiting Japanese. That's my understanding, anyways.
We were on the top floor, so we had a nice view of the sunset, which I captured here using the new built-in panorama feature in iOS 6. There are some unfortunate artifacts on the building, but the sunset and city look pretty good.

_08/30/12_ California Incline
After two particularly 'bleh' desperation shots, I think I have a winner here. I took some photos of this on 8/22/12 but wasn't happy with the results, but was inspired to come back with SLR, tripod and graduated ND filter. That's exactly what I did tonight, and here's the result.
The California Incline is an old stretch of road that gets people from Pacific Coast Highway up to California/Ocean (and vice versa) in Santa Monica where the high bluffs are. Sometime next year they're going to close and rebuild it, so I'm glad I was able to get this shot.

_07/13/12_ Pretty Sky
Wispy clouds + clear sunset + 15 minutes = this scene. It's a good example of waiting until after sunset to get pretty clouds, and also adding something for context (it's much more meaningful with the palm trees).
