Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

Hotel Lafeyette
Looks like a nice place to stay...
_09/23/12_ Descending Flowers
Today we left the lovely Miyako Hybrid Hotel in Torrance and made the long journey back to Santa Monica. This feature was in the front of the hotel - the metal flower chain thing extended from the ceiling to the rock bed below. It's not a great photo because the rocks aren't actually in good focus, but oh well.
I'm also happy to report we crossed a restaurant off our bucket list - finally made it to King's Hawaiian, which was a couple miles from the hotel. So, so good.

_09/22/12_ Dusk in Torrance
After the spectacle of seeing space shuttle Endeavour fly over, we headed to Torrance for a little stay-cation in the Miyako Hybrid Hotel, which was a lot of fun. The 'hybrid' part refers to the fact that everything is Japanese-American. It's a taste of Japan for white folks like us, and it's a comfort zone for visiting Japanese. That's my understanding, anyways.
We were on the top floor, so we had a nice view of the sunset, which I captured here using the new built-in panorama feature in iOS 6. There are some unfortunate artifacts on the building, but the sunset and city look pretty good.

_06/20/12_ Welcome
I met some friends from work at the W hotel for some happy hour refreshments. Apparently the human performers from One Direction were staying there, so there were hordes of young girls outside, waiting to catch a glimpse. I guess. They were NOT welcome in the hotel.

_12/09/11_ No Diving
Turns out I lied - it looks like I will, indeed, be uploading daily photos from North Carolina. This is the pool at our hotel, which for some reason had no swimmers on this December evening. I wish I had a more North Carolinian photo for you, but it was a long day of travel, US Airways was terrible, and I've had a pretty bad headache for most of it. C'est la vie.

_11/30/11_ Dragon Lamp
After a long day of conferencing, a coworker and I headed to Chinatown to get dinner at the fabulous House of Nanking. On the walk back, I grabbed this shot of one of their highly stylized lamps.

In other news, I posted a bunch more Death Valley Photos in their very own gallery. Give 'em a look.

Grand Palace Hotel
New Orleans
Not so grand anymore... This shell of a hotel is right at Canal Street and I-10, and it was probably a nice hotel - it even had a jazz nite club! Now it's a depressing 20-story reminder of Katrina. What I don't understand is that while searching for info on the hotel, I saw reviews for it as recently as 2010. I can't see how this is an operating hotel that people could stay in - they must keep the entrance pretty hidden. It looked completely abandoned to me.
Damage at Hickam Hotel
Hickam AFB, Oahu
Hickam Hotel was the nickname for the Big Barracks on Hickam Air Force Base. Thanks to a sign out front, I know that it was completed in 1939 for a cost of just over $1 million, housed 3200 airmen and was the biggest single structure on any Army base.
That also made it a target on 12/7/41 and it was heavily damaged. Although the structure was repaired and painted over, much of the damage remains visible.
Driskill Hotel
We learned on our tour of downtown Austin that this hotel has changed hands 6 times since it was built, usually because it was about to be demolished. I guess Mr. Driskill was too ambitious, and it was too expensive for people to stay there. There were plenty of people there when we visited, although it may have been for the air conditioning. It sure is opulent...
