Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

_09/11/12_ Empty Shelves
These shelves used to hold current journals in this library. They're no longer needed, because no one does research anymore. I mean, because most of them are online now.
I always liked these rows of shelves, they are very aesthetically pleasing to me, and I'm sad to see them go. At least I got one last photo. I wish I could have moved the study carrel in the back out of the way so the lines were truly uninterrupted.

_08/24/12_ Track
This is an empty card catalog drawer, rotated on its side. The track is for the backing that holds all the cards upright at the front of the drawer.

[last year] one of my best made-up words...
_08/17/12_ Private Entrance
I have a feeling this sign hasn't been changed since the building was built.

_08/08/12_ Empty Shelves
Books were here once. Not so much anymore.

[last year] one of my favorite pemba pics...
_07/21/12_ Branch
After I started working on this photo, 'branch' started seeming like a very strange word. BRANCH. Not a very pretty word, really.
Anyways, it's the local branch of the library. It's over-processed a bit, but that's what all the cool kids are doing these days. Gotta love that clarity slider.

_06/13/12_ Dog
This is Blanca, a 130-pound Great Pyrenees. She is a licensed therapy dog, and was on hand in the library today to help students relax as they studied for finals. It was really fun seeing their faces light up when they saw the dogs and got to spend time with them. Note that Blanca has her own medical center ID badge!
So, this is just an iPhone snapshot, nothing too special. I kind of like the wide angle closeup look, though - it exaggerates how ginormous she is.

[last year] weird - last years photo was taken about 10 feet from todays...
_06/06/12_ Three Seats
These desks caught my eye as a cool subject with the afternoon light coming through the curtain. I'm pretty sure everything in this photo is original to the building, which opened in the mid-60s. Although I like the photo at a glance, I'm a little frustrated with myself that it's not perfectly centered - all of the straight lines are just a little bit off.

[last year] no more legos...
_06/05/12_ Viewing Venus
Did you see the transit of Venus? I'm happy to say I did! Now I can die happy, since I will almost certainly die before 2117 when it happens again.
There were a lot of folks out to view it at UCLA, where astronomers set up telescopes and some of my librarian friends were on hand to show historic documents related to the transit of 1769, which was the reason Captain Cook was sent to Tahiti - so he could record it. He just happened to find some other stuff - like Australia - along the way.
These students are viewing the sun with solar viewers that were tied to a light stand with orange ribbon for all to come and use. It was hard to see Venus with these instead of a telescope, but you still could make it out.

Tiffany Dome
Apparently this is the largest Tiffany art glass dome in the world. I don't know if there are larger non-Tiffany domes or something, but that's what the sign says. It's pretty impressive, and the entire room is gorgeous, although badly lit. In case you can't tell, this chandelier hangs down from the center of the dome.
The inscription around the bottom of the dome says: "Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn."
