Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

And thus completes Year 5. Tomorrow I shall begin on Year 6 of the One/Day Project, so update your bookmarks if you want up-to-date photos.
As per tradition, the final photo of Year 5 was taken at the beach at sunset. My wife picked me up from work and we braved through some exceptionally bad traffic to PCH. We parked in the first lot we could turn into, since sunset was rapidly approaching. We trudged through the sand and found plenty of stones spread across the beach, these four nicely-spaced ones caught my eye and I got a few shots off before the sun completely disappeared. I like this one mostly because of the sheen off the wet sand.

__01/31/13__ Greetings from CA
I had jury duty today and was excused in the afternoon (yay). I took my bike so I could ride home, and I'm happy I did - it was a beautiful day and I got to ride along the beach for much of the ride.
At one point, there were four lifeguard towers all next to each other for whatever reason. They struck me as a group of friends watching the sunset.

__01/26/13__ Amusement
Tonight I headed out to the Santa Monica Pier to utilize my rented ultra-wide (Tokina 11-16mm) before I have to send it back on Monday. It happened to be incredibly foggy. This view of Pacific Park rides was my favorite, and it fills up the 11mm field of view quite nicely. I took a lot of shots and they all turned out different. This one stood out mostly because of the purple glow in the fog and reflected on the wood planks.

__01/06/13__ American Coaster
This is the roller coaster on the Santa Monica pier. I composed so you could only see the top part of the track and nothing else, and then I went nuts in Lightroom to make it more dramatic in a very Instagrammy sort of way. It's not the greatest photo for sure, but it's because my main focus was on this:

That's right, I'm working on time lapse stuff! I finally have all the equipment I need to do a decent job. My Nikon D7000 has an intervalometer built in, I have a battery grip so it can stay powered for hours, I have an excellent tripod that won't move, and I have a computer with QT7 and significant processing power and disk space. I'm hoping to piece together a nice little video of the pier with multiple time lapseses.

Pacific Design Center
A small part of the amazingly colorful Pacific Design Center. I've always found it disappointing, though, because it seems like it should be a school or museum or something, but it's just a bunch of showrooms. So I'm told.
Giant Spider Crab
(Macrocheira kaempferi)
I highly recommend making several passes of your favorite exhibits. The first time I went by the spider crabs, they were all in the back, but when I came back an hour or two later, this guy was right up against the glass. Off-camera flash provided the illumination.
West Coast Sea Nettle
(Chrysaora fuscescens)
I like the sweeping shape of this jelly, I just wish I could have gotten the whole thing.
West Coast Sea Nettle
(Chrysaora fuscescens)
I love how the background is illuminated in this shot - at first I just thought it was a neat texture and didn't realize it was all tentacles.

Lighting thanks to off-camera flash. This tank is curved, so it's hard to get a good shot in general. Being able to control the lighting is huge.
