Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

This is a single-exposure taken at Santa Monica Place outside the Louis Vuitton store. I hope it's kind of confusing to look at, that was my goal.
We did actually go inside the store, but I found a much better deal on a shoulder bag (man purse) at TJ Maxx, which did not have any large security guards at the doors. Also, the bag I got was quite reasonably priced and does not look stupid.
And Happy Mother's Day!

2013-03-09 Kelp
Tonight I went for a walk/run through the sand around sunset. It was fun, and quite a workout. The ocean was pretty rough and there was a lot of seaweed washed up on on the beach. This bit in particular caught my eye as it made a long curve in the wet sand.

__02/28/13__ Four Stones
And thus completes Year 5. Tomorrow I shall begin on Year 6 of the One/Day Project, so update your bookmarks if you want up-to-date photos.
As per tradition, the final photo of Year 5 was taken at the beach at sunset. My wife picked me up from work and we braved through some exceptionally bad traffic to PCH. We parked in the first lot we could turn into, since sunset was rapidly approaching. We trudged through the sand and found plenty of stones spread across the beach, these four nicely-spaced ones caught my eye and I got a few shots off before the sun completely disappeared. I like this one mostly because of the sheen off the wet sand.

__02/10/13__ Sandpipers in Sync
There were hundreds upon hundreds of sandpipers at the beach today, and I got this in-motion photo of a small fraction of them as they ran away from an incoming wave. The group behavior was mesmerizing.

__02/03/13__ Lone Tree
This tree is perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. It's not really as serene as you might think, as it's in the middle of Palisades Park in Santa Monica, with lots of people and cars and buildings and roads and sand before you actually get to the ocean. I knelt down low to cut out everything but the flowers, tree and sky. Because I was forced to get close to the tree because of a fence, I used the iPhone's panorama function to get the wide shot. I wish I could have gotten a horizontal view, but the dynamic range with the setting sun was too much.

I'm expecting something fun tomorrow. Some major photography equipment that will bring some major changes for me. I'm very much looking forward to it. Stay tuned.

__01/26/13__ Amusement
Tonight I headed out to the Santa Monica Pier to utilize my rented ultra-wide (Tokina 11-16mm) before I have to send it back on Monday. It happened to be incredibly foggy. This view of Pacific Park rides was my favorite, and it fills up the 11mm field of view quite nicely. I took a lot of shots and they all turned out different. This one stood out mostly because of the purple glow in the fog and reflected on the wood planks.

__01/06/13__ American Coaster
This is the roller coaster on the Santa Monica pier. I composed so you could only see the top part of the track and nothing else, and then I went nuts in Lightroom to make it more dramatic in a very Instagrammy sort of way. It's not the greatest photo for sure, but it's because my main focus was on this:

That's right, I'm working on time lapse stuff! I finally have all the equipment I need to do a decent job. My Nikon D7000 has an intervalometer built in, I have a battery grip so it can stay powered for hours, I have an excellent tripod that won't move, and I have a computer with QT7 and significant processing power and disk space. I'm hoping to piece together a nice little video of the pier with multiple time lapseses.
