Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

My wife is still in the hospital and will be for a bit longer. It sucks, a lot.
But, my parents and her mom are in town, and it was a nice break to go out to dinner at one of my favorite places, Buddha's Belly. We parked in the new mall - Santa Monica Place - and walked through it to get to the restaurant, and this was one of the views of it.

_06/16/12_ Mall Seat
This was taken tonight at Santa Monica Place, where I picked up some tea for brewing later, and some ice cream for eating right then. If you're ever there, go to the so-called Market and get ice cream at N'ice Cream. My favorite is n'ice cream delight. It's amazing.
I used my Gorillapod to steady my compact on a ledge that overlooked this scene. I took a lot of shots - some were blurry and some didn't have any interesting motion. I'm a little sad I didn't get a chance to use my new carbon fiber tripod, but since I rode my bike to the mall, it would have been a bit large.

_05/27/12_ Face Sculpting
I started watching a Lynda.com course about night and low light photography, so I headed down to the Santa Monica pier to try some of it out. I definitely got some cool photos, although it's hard to remember the techniques while also searching out good photos.
One thing that stuck with me - find the good light, and then work with it. In this photo, the bright overhead light in between the sculpter and sculptee offered some drama to the scene, and so I took several shots of it.
The kid looked very cold and not particularly happy. This is why people only smile for the camera, and not the paintbrush. Or... whatever people use to mold clay. You just can't stay happy sitting still.

_05/24/12_ Brass Camera
I was really excited to get this new camera, until an evil spirit turned it to brass to spite me. The spirit materialized to mock me, so we fought and I destroyed him with spicy sauce. And yet, the camera remains brass and I know not how to lift the spell.
Some days... you know?

_04/28/12_ Packing Up
This morning my wife and I headed over to Pasadena for the occasional Doo Dah Parade, which is awesome. It's known as the anti-Rose Parade, and it's full of colorful characters. I'm sure many of them were drunk.
I took photos at the parade, but just snapshots, nothing artistic. Later, I went to the beach and walked about 2 miles in the sand, which was quite a workout. Towards the beginning I took this photo of three people that were just packing up from an afternoon at the beach. In the center, you can see a parasailer.
I like how the woman on the right seems to be standing on a ball of light. It's lens flare, of course, which is pretty much unavoidable if you point your lens straight at the sun.

_04/22/12_ Newt Sex
Happy Earth Day!
We went on a short hike this morning and saw nature in action - some California newts doing some reproducing. Although I think there are 7 newts in this photo, only two of them are actually mating and the rest are other males that want in on the action. At least that's what I read online.
We actually saw two of these scenes! Spring is in the air I guess.
This photo turned out OK, but most of the ones I took were throwaways because of reflection and distortion issues from shooting through the surface of the water.

_04/14/12_ Twist
This is the top of an awesome sculpture called Gestation III, by Baile Oakes, which sits in Palisades Park in Santa Monica. I haven't witnessed it, but apparently at the winter solstice the sun shines right through the center of it as it sets over the ocean. I took a photo of it in Year 3, too.
I hope Sammy and Tammy are very happy together.

_04/08/12_ Overhead Lamp
Happy Easter! This photo has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's a lamp on the side of Santa Monica Seafood that happened to be over my head as I walked by.
Hope you had a great weekend.
