Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __02/22/10__ Ripple Fork
A day or two ago I noticed that if I left a little bit of water in the sink and turned on the garbage disposal, awesome standing waves appeared. That shimmering, magical pattern was just begging to become a daily photo, so here you go. I first tried with my hands, but it was too hard so I went with this serving fork.
Check out the setup photo if you dare.

Today I drove South to Sonoita and stopped at the Empire Ranch, which has a bunch of old buildings that you can visit. This sink was in the cowboy's quarters, built around 1871. Apparently it's still a working ranch, but the historic buildings have been turned over to the BLM, and most of them are being repaired so they don't collapse.
It's pretty neat, and the area is beautiful. I'll try and post more pics later. I took a lot of shots, but this one was my favorite.

Got the lighting by using a waterproof remote flash unit, a.k.a. an SB-800 in a ziplock bag. I thought the sink would look neat illuminated from below, so I played around. I was a little nervous turning on the water, but the bag kept the flash perfectly dry. Did some tweaking in Lightroom, including painting the blue tint on the water. As interesting as the lighting is, I thought a subtle touch of color would make it a stronger image.

Thanks for all the comments on yesterday's photo - you guys must all really like mac & cheese ;)

This photo was inspired by washing the dishes, what fun! I set my camera for a 2-second delay, and tried to turn on the water just as the shot went off, which was difficult. This photo was the most interesting out of about 30 that I took. I made the image black and white, because the only color in it was the blue tint of the flash.
