Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

By wonderful coincidence, we got to meet my friends' 5 month old today while we were both visiting Tucson at the same time. She is quite adorable, as you can see here. I really like this smile I got!

_10/22/12_ Happy
This is a back massager. Off camera flash, posterboard for the background... that's pretty much it. It's kind of like a cute Sputnik.
Can you think of a better photo title than 'happy'? I tried, but everything seemed overtly sexual.

More aquarium photos are coming soon! I've pared them down from 418 to 66, so I'm making progress.

__02/12/12__ Katie
This is our friend Katie, who agreed to be a model for me, since I needed some more shots for my Environmental Portraiture class on Monday. It worked out great - she was a wonderful model and the light was quite lovely. This shot is on the bridge over PCH that we walked over to get down to the beach. I got some good beach photos, too, but I liked this one because of the shapes and patterns and crazy backlight.
There is a large reflector (piece of white foam core) just to my left that my assistant/wife held to illuminate her face.

[last year] beautiful engineering...
__02/04/12__ Armen
This is another fellow student from the Environmental Portraiture class I'm taking. This photo doesn't really match the assignment for today's photo shoot, but it's still my favorite, therefore it's my photo of the day. I mean, look at that wall! And the color contrast with his shirt! And that great smile!
The lighting is a single bounced flash.

__01/21/12__ Windy Wife
Here's my wife, holding a smile while she gets blown back and forth near the ocean. Of course I always like taking photos of her, but this was specifically for the class I mentioned yesterday and a few other times over the past couple weeks. The main takeaway from this shot is that her face is correctly exposed, even though there are several places that are blown out, and of course the background is all but featureless.
We had a storm we had last night that cleared up pretty early in the morning, but the wind has stayed all day. I really like this shot because of the way her hair is blowing - it looks nice. Many of the other photos were quite... chaotic.

[last year] unexpectedly awesome...
__01/20/12__ Lisa
Lisa was one of two friends at work that helped me take some photos for the Environmental Portraiture class I'm taking. I was practicing getting subjects with front, side and back light. This photo is deep in the shade, so it's not really any of those situations, but I like the photo.
I only had my S95 on hand, which required a pretty high ISO. Hopefully you can't tell too much.
Stay tuned for more people photos!

In other news, I was sad to hear that the LA Zoo's hippo had to be euthanized. I took some photos of it last year in healthier times. I remember being really excited to see it walking around and eating before going back in the water.

__01/15/12__ Tasty Fingers
Fingers are tasty, aren't they? Five-month-old Eliza joined us for breakfast at the farmer's market this morning. Her mom did, too :)

In other news, I made a gallery from my recent trip to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, from which my daily photo was this hummingbird.

_09/23/11_ Happy Couple
I went to high school and college with the well-dressed person on the left. He just got married to the well-dressed person on the right.
The wedding was in Las Vegas and it was a lot of fun. My wife and I had a great time catching up with friends. For this shot, I set my S95 to Tv and set the shutter speed to 1/6s to capture the ambient lighting, and used the flash to freeze subjects. After the flash went off, I rotated the camera to get the full effect. Fittingly, this shot turned out the best out of all of them!

More Las Vegas photos!

[last year] and now for something completely different...
