Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

__01/31/13__ Greetings from CA
I had jury duty today and was excused in the afternoon (yay). I took my bike so I could ride home, and I'm happy I did - it was a beautiful day and I got to ride along the beach for much of the ride.
At one point, there were four lifeguard towers all next to each other for whatever reason. They struck me as a group of friends watching the sunset.

_12/21/12_ Apocalypse Blue
The only photo I took today. It has not been a good day.
I didn't take it with this in mind, but it is a little end-of-days - like the massive sun explosion blew off the heads of these two palm trees.

Glowing Plants
Backlit plants as the sun was just about to disappear behind the mountains.
Over the Hill
The sun disappearing behind a hill, taken in the opposite direction as the previous photo. The lens flare create a ring around the edges that I've never really seen before.
_11/18/12_ Fenced Off
I took a little bike ride this afternoon to help move some blood through my legs. I'm pretty sore after yesterday's 16-mile walk. More photos of that, coming soon!
This is a coral tree in the median of Olympic Blvd. It's fenced off as part of the Expo line construction that will take light rail all the way to downtown Santa Monica. Very exciting, but it will still be years before it's completed. This is a 3-shot vertical panorama, stitched together in Photoshop.

_11/01/12_ Sunset Fence
This bush caught my eye as I was riding home because it was backlit by the low sun. Stopped down to f/8 on my compact to get the sun star.

Remember when I went to the Aquarium of the Pacific 1.5 weeks ago, but I only posted one photo? Here are more photos!!!

_07/04/12_ Sunflower
This is a sunflower that wouldn't fit in the vase at home, so I cut it very short for this little vase and brought it to my wife at the hospital. It sucks that she's still there.
I used the Cross Process 2 preset in Lightroom for the look, mostly. I'm happy I was able to get such a sharp shot at 1/20s, but I guess that's why I took 3 of them. The other 2 weren't so great.
I'm a little frustrated that some of the elements are tilted, but oh well. I cropped based on the water, so it's the one level thing in the image.

[last year] so many people...
_06/05/12_ Viewing Venus
Did you see the transit of Venus? I'm happy to say I did! Now I can die happy, since I will almost certainly die before 2117 when it happens again.
There were a lot of folks out to view it at UCLA, where astronomers set up telescopes and some of my librarian friends were on hand to show historic documents related to the transit of 1769, which was the reason Captain Cook was sent to Tahiti - so he could record it. He just happened to find some other stuff - like Australia - along the way.
These students are viewing the sun with solar viewers that were tied to a light stand with orange ribbon for all to come and use. It was hard to see Venus with these instead of a telescope, but you still could make it out.

_05/20/12_ Eclipse
Did you see the eclipse? As you can see here, we got a pretty cool view of it in Santa Monica. The marine layer started rolling in right as the moon was reaching its peak coverage of the sun, and you could clearly see the eclipse with your naked eyes.
I walked around the neighborhood looking for something to put the eclipse in context, and found this mockingbird perched on a church building with a bug in its mouth. Tasty.
