Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Please enjoy, and feel free to comment. Like the shot? Give it a thumbs up. Really like it? Buy a print or digital download.

Thanks for looking!

_09/26/12_ Up and Down
Another high key photo, but this time it's purposeful, not just inverted to make it more interesting.
These are two glasses we have. Sometimes, we'll fill them with liquid and drink from them. Other times they sit in the cupboard.

Life is still kinda sucky at the moment, but I did manage to actually spend time creating a photo today. I don't feel like explaining it, though, so just enjoy.

_04/17/12_ Free Flow
This piece is a commentary on extremism and our polarized society. There seems to be such little area for compromise, and there's so much fighting back and forth in what appears to be an endless cycle.
Nah, I'm just kidding, it's the end of a pipe snake that we use to clean festering hair clumps from the drain. But still...

While you're here, why not look at some Chicago photos?

_07/28/11_ Antique Glass
This afternoon I had the opportunity to photograph a collection of glass eyes from Germany that date back to the 1860s. Considering that these were completely handmade, the detail is astounding. The box contained 50 different glass eyes, but I was immediately drawn towards these hazel colored ones, perhaps because I have hazel eyes myself. I was surprised to discover that they're not symmetrical.
I touched up the background in Lightroom to get rid of dust and lint, and I blackened the pupils a bit. I did not do any white balance adjustments - the subtle green tint was part of the glass.
While I have your attention, go check out my blog post about iPhone panorama photography. I plan on using the apps I talk about on my upcoming Africa trip for the One/Day Project.

_07/18/11_ White Bamboo
I set my S95 on manual to take this blown-out shot of some lucky bamboo with a curtain as the backdrop. As you may have guessed, this a desperation shot.

_06/17/11_ White Wine Sangria
It's been a strange week. Despite working all five days on campus, I never set foot in my own office. Today ended with a massive 5-person retirement party with live music and champagne.
It was definitely a night for food and drinks, so we headed down to a neat new restaurant/bar where I got this drink to start. It was tasty and I took a photo.

_08/15/10_ Bat Watching
Austin Trip, Day 3
This photo is of the bats emerging from under the Congress Street Bridge. The colony is the largest urban bat population in North America. People line the bridge at dusk to watch, and various river boats hang out and shine bat-friendly red lights up at them so the humans can see.
Apparently tonight was not a good night. On a good night the sky gets black with them. 1.4 million of them!
Other fun Austin things we did today included lunch at the Salt Lick and a movie at an Alamo theater. We've had a great time here, but it will be nice to fly tomorrow. It's a lot cooler in LA :)

_08/13/10_ Texas State Capitol Dome
Austin Trip, Day 1
First day in Austin and man, it is hot and muggy! This morning we took a tour of the Capitol, where I got this shot. For a sense of scale, the star at the top is 8 feet across.
We also went to the LBJ library and town lake. We ended the long, hot, exhausting day by bar hopping on 6th street with cousins from San Antonio who drove up. What a day!
