Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > _03/16/09_ Colorized Sunset
We have a friend visiting for a few days, so we took him to downtown Santa Monica for dinner and to check out the pier. Right after sunset, I grabbed this shot of 2 palm trees. The sunset was very nice, but the photo was very bland, so I started playing around with white balance and other color tools. I tweaked it until I got something I liked.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > _09/16/09_ Red Staircase
This red staircase is in the Physics building at UCLA. I like the spiral shape, but I don't like the quality that came out of the iPhone, so I might actually reshoot it for another daily down the road, now that I know where it is.

Happy 4th of July! We got our grill on and had some people over. Our friends Yassi and her sister Nazzi brought this delicious American Flag cake. I tried to focus in on one blueberry and one strawberry while still showing the "stripes" in the background. Part of me wanted to spend more time on it and get the perfect composition, but a bigger part of me wanted to eat it right away. More importantly, so did everyone else. It ended up being very delicious - I ate 3 pieces.

A Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. He's landing on the branch to get the piece of meat he's looking at.
My family and I had a great time and saw a lot of animals but none of the usual reptiles, since it's far too cold (dropped to 25 last night). If you're ever in Tucson, you really should go to the Desert Museum, it's an amazing place. Go early, especially in the warmer months.
This photo was taken during the Raptor Free Flight demonstration that also included a Chihuahuan Raven (not a raptor, but that's ok), a Great Horned Owl and a Harris Hawk.

I have a bunch more good photos, including the other birds mentioned above, and I'll post a link once I get them sorted, edited and uploaded. This is my best action shot from today.

UPDATE: I've uploaded the rest of my Desert Museum photos. Please check it out!

Bicyclist at the Santa Monica pier at sunset. Taken with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 that I rented! I've decided to give renting a shot so I can play with more lenses. I really wanted to try the f/1.4, but it wasn't available, oh well.
Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > _03/05/09_ Microplane
For today's desperation shot, I grabbed something interesting from the kitchen - a Microplane grater. I held the grater in front of my SB-800 at full power, using the smallest aperture available to get the stars. I got the grater wet, but the water wasn't staying in the holes, so I rubbed some soap on it so the moisture would "stick". You can see the bubbles in a few of the holes.

This shot of people playing at the beach was taken off the Santa Monica pier, just before the sun went behind the mountains. Tonight we took my brother to our favorite downtown spots - Buddha's Belly and Xooro.

I wonder what this view costs.
This fancy building is on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, just North of San Vicente Blvd. I assume it's condos. Point Dume is the bump on the left in the distance - it marks the Northernmost point of the Santa Monica bay.
I set my camera on a fencepost and put the strap underneath to steady it and get it level. It took quite a bit of wrangling to get right, but it was necessary for the 20-second exposure. I think it worked out.

Sunset from the bluffs near Santa Monica pier. I liked the framing of the yucca plants, although I was hoping for a few more clouds, since it was pretty cloudy for much of the day and even rained pretty hard this morning. I took quite a few shots of this scene and selected this one because of the seagulls.
