Welcome to the One/Day Project

Here you will find hundreds of photos that I've taken every day since 2/29/2008. I reached my initial goal of making it to leap day 2012 (after 1462 photos), but I'm still going - the new goal is to make it to Monday, 2/29/2016.

Every photo in these galleries is a unique creation from that day. My intent is to create art, and I've taken great care to create most of these photographs. In addition to not uploading simple snapshots, I try incredibly hard not to repeat myself.

Big Bear | Nov 12 : Our annual Thanksgiving/Anniversary trip this year was to Big Bear Lake, about 2 ½ hours away in the San Bernardino Mountains. It was a pretty low-key trip, with no big hikes or major sight-seeing. It was fun to be in the mountains, and I had a lot of fun taking photos of the lake at sunrise and sunset. Chicago | Mar 12 : Four days in Chicago in the spring. We visited the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, SkyDeck (Sears Tower), Museum of Science and Industry, and the Art Institute. We also took an architecture cruise and made it out to Oak Park to see Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.

Orange City | Apr 11 : Along with my wife and mom-in-law, I visited Orange City, Iowa in late April for my grandmother-in-law's 100th birthday. The small town (pop. 6k) is a Dutch enclave with windmills, wooden shoes and over half a dozen reformed churches. Most of these photos are from a single day that we spent driving around. A few at the end are from Omaha, where we flew into and out of.

Ventura | Jul 10 : Short trip to Ventura, CA and the Channel Islands for the July 4th weekend. We took a wildlife cruise along the North shore of Anacapa island where we saw dolphins, sea lions and tons of birds. We stayed in Ventura 2 nights - a great small town with excellent beaches, great food, a mission from 1782 and a historic downtown. Read the corresponding blog post.

San Francisco | Feb 10 : I traveled to San Francisco from 2/8-2/14 to attend Macworld 2010 at the Moscone Center. I was busy during most of the day with sessions, but still managed to go on some photo excursions, including a trip to the Golden Gate Bridge. Something to note is that I only brought my 50mm f/1.4 lens with me. I missed my 18-200 at times, but overall it was nice to go minimalist.

Yosemite | Nov 09 : For our first year anniversary, my wife and I traveled to Yosemite National Park for the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend. We had dinner at the Ahwahnee Hotel, did some easy hikes, and drove to Hetch Hetchy. We stayed in Curry Village in a heated tent cabin, which was nice for the freezing night temperatures. West Coast | Aug 09 : My wife and I traveled by train to 2 weddings during this 10-day trip. The first wedding was on 8/1 in Sonoma, CA and the second was on 8/8 in Enumclaw, WA, near Seattle. In the end, we spent quality time in Berkeley, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. We ate food, we saw sights, we visited friends, we enjoyed life. Oh, and I took some photos.

Joshua Tree | Feb 09 : Weekend trip to Joshua Tree National Park. It was very cold at times, and we stayed in a warm hotel in 29 Palms. We drove the Geology Tour road, hiked Ryan Mountain, watched the sunset from Keys View and hiked to 49 Palms oasis. Here are some of the best photos from the trip, enjoy!

New England | Sep 08 : Visited Boston, MA and Newport, RI during a trip to Fairhaven, MA for a wedding. We stayed in Providence, RI. Got it? In Boston we walked the entire Freedom Trail, seeing all the historical sites. In Newport we toured 3 mansions, although it was raining too hard to get any photos of the first one. Both days were incredibly overcast, so don't look for any pretty skies in these photos.

UCSB | Jul 08 : University of California, Santa Barbara It's an absolutely beautiful campus located right on the coast. There's a lagoon where I took many of the bird photos that was fun to walk around. I was only there for 2 days for a conference, but I made sure to take extra time for photos.

NYC | Mar 07 : Just before my wife spent 2 weeks in Maine, we visited New York City. No offense to ME, but there's just not quite as much to do there. Plus we have awesome friends that let us stay with them in Manhattan so we didn't have to pay for a hotel. Thanks Tim and Jackie! As usual, we did our best to cram as much stuff as possible into the few days we were there.

Santa Cruz Island | Feb 07 : We stayed at the upper campground at Scorpion Anchorage on the Eastern part of Santa Cruz Island. We almost stayed 2 nights because the Santa Ana winds were so bad the boat couldn't come over in the morning. Luckily they died down in the afternoon so we could get "rescued." We hiked about 10 miles of trails around Scorpion Anchorage, and the weather (except the wind) was great both days!
