Two Head Self Portrait
8/16/08
I'm nearing the 6 month mark on my dailies project, but I hadn't done a self portrait until today. I got this idea when I was trying to come up with creative uses for a long exposure other than cityscapes at night for a workshop I'm helping to teach. I used my compact to prove that compacts can do cool effects just like SLRs, you just need to find the settings.
This is a single exposure: I set up the camera about a foot away from a candle on my gorillapod, set the shutter speed to 4 seconds. I used the self timer to give myself time to get my head still. After the camera fired, I counted to ~2 and then quickly moved my position and changed my facial expression to "envious" and tried to hold still until the 4 seconds was up.
In case that sounds easy, I should also add that I took over 80 shots to practice and get it right.

on August 17, 2008Hello brother. This is my favorite yet. Especially your "envious" face. You need to teach some of these techniques to your family! Love you!
