Dawn Droplet
2009-05-11
This nice little water droplet is sitting on the needles of a dawn redwood tree (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). It's one of the stars in the botanical gardens because until earlier last century it was thought extinct until it was discovered growing in central China. There are several, including the tallest one in North America, planted in 1948. It's also unusual because it loses its needles in winter.
This shot was taken super close up with my macro lens and the widest aperture and gave the cool blurred background that elevated this photo past the other contenders. I wish the drop was a little sharper, but I didn't realize until after that my shutter speed was only 1/125 - not really fast enough for sharp macro shots.
