Happy Earth Day! Also, stand up for science!
Today's photo is not from a pro-earth rally, but a pro-research rally. I don't want to get into the details here, but I attended to show support for the medical researchers that have come under attack by extremists. The researcher that got people organized at UCLA recently had his car set on fire while it was parked at his house. The guy speaking here started the Pro-Test group in the UK. I got the shot while standing next to the "real" photographers :)
Gpssue asked about what I use for macro shots in reference to yesterday's post. All I have is Nikon's 60mm f/2.8 "micro" lens. Dunno why they can't call it macro like the rest of the world. I bounced my flash off the ceiling for the light, using the smallest aperture I could before the image got dark.
[ last year - http://www.jawsnap.net/Daily/Year1/i-KNB3XWR ] My first (and only) smoke shot! I really need to try this again, it was fun...

on April 24, 2009I guess, that the internet ate my comment on your latest upload. I did write that violence sometimes indicate a person or situation that is fighting a losing battle...love the shirt, DoF and signs!

on April 23, 2009Yay science! Boo, extremists (of any nature.)
Cool photojournalist shot here. I really like the DOF, with focus on the tee-shirt's message, but I wish the shot was a little wider to take in more of the supporters and signs in the BG. That's something I struggle with myself, as I love my telephotos and I tend to ignore my wider lenses all too often.
BTW, I think the "Micro" vs "Macro" label is due to the traditional definition of macro, whereby a macro lens is capable of a 1:1 image reproduction on the film/sensor and lenses that can be focused close but magnify less than that are considered closeup lenses. Of course, due to marketing geniuses, now almost any lens able to focus closer than a foot is labeled as having macro capabilities, so the water's been muddied and it's probably likely to stay that way.

on April 23, 2009Excellent comp! Tells a big portion of the protest story- wish all photos of public demonstrations turned out this good. Loved your smoke image!
