Uprising Victims
2011-08-14 Africa Trip, Day 14 Today was an enjoyable experience in Johannesburg, but it's hard to classify it as 'fun'. We started by visiting an informal settlement in Kliptown - basically slums, then visited the Hector Pieterson Museum. It commemorates all the casualties of the Soweto uprising, but is named after the first child that was shot on 6/16/76. I thought the names on bricks was a simple and powerful memorial. Finally, we visited the Apartheid Museum to learn about the racist policies that led to the uprising. Fun stuff! We also visited the Gold Reef City theme park where we got to take a tour of an old gold mine. That was actually really cool and not emotionally draining :) [last year]
